Looks like they're switching over to electric power steering. I hope Mazda implemented this well and did not hamper the steering feel that miatas are known for. Perhaps it's improved. Car and Driver preferred the electric steering in the BMW 5 series.

Just because the Maserati is a more expensive car doesn't mean that making a lower priced ripoff makes it legit.

Which would be relevant......if it was a ripoff, which it isn't.

Sharing certain design cues, even distinctive ones, doesn't a "rip off" make, especially in the the automotive world, where design elements are shared across the board, or a particular observer can see multiple previous design hints depending on the angle viewed.

That you see it, doesn't make it so. And if design similarities constitute "rip off", then 95% of cars today have "ripped off" something else. It's a non-issue.

I like the front, don't love the back.

And to people complaining about lack of power... its 2014... every car is fast. If you think this car is slow because a souped up accord can outrun it you are missing the entire point of a car like this.

I like the back. Reminds me a bit of the Elise/Exige.

The electric steering concerns me.
It will all come down to smile factor: Can the ND improve what my NA does for me? The problem with this thought, however, is that the NA is SO EASY to maintain that one can be a little care-free about the car. I am not sure the same can be said about the ND.

I think the bigger issue is a stock accord, or camary can out run you.

It isn't an issue at all. Modern V6 sedans all put out impressive numbers. Numbers that would put some pure sports cars from the past to shame.

2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club Edition 0-60 mph 6.0 Quarter Mile 14.4
2013 Accord = 0-60 mph 5.5 Quarter Mile 13.9
2012 Toyota Camry SE (V6) = 0-60 mph 5.7 Quarter Mile 14.1

1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 = 0-60 mph 6.4 Quarter mile 14.7
1994 Ford Saleen Mustang S-351 = 0-60mph 5.8 Quarter mile 14.1
1989 Toyota Supra Turbo = 0-60 mph 6.5 Quarter mile 15.0
1992 Chevrolet Corvette LT1 = 0-60 mph 5.6 Quarter mile 13.9

If you are drag racing Accords and Camrys, you have bigger issues than the type of car you drive. No one buys an MX-5 to go fast in a straight line, and there isn't a Camry or Accord built that can beat the MX-5 on a road course.

I guess I am. 😉 At the time I traded mine in for an STi.

The Miata is a new sports car not an old one. It should perform better than family cars.

And it does.

When that road turns, or curves, there aren't going to be any Camrys and Accords in sight.

If you're buying a Miata to drag race on the freeway, you're doing it wrong. The formula has worked for 25 years, and continues to. Making a numb family hauler go fast in a straight line doesn't negate the value of a nimble, athletic Roadster.

I think the ND looks great. I think it will sell well.

However, in my opinion, it is a bit too aggressive, I prefer the NA and NC cuteness. But I think Mazda was right to make it more aggressive looking - I'm quite sure I'm in the minority.

I wont try to debate anyone who thinks the Miata should have more power. If you don't get it, you don't get it.

I'm not a fan. I just don't feel like it's a good look for the Miata. I prefer the previous versions quite a bit.

I actually think it looks too sharp edged, more than their newer styling is. Feel like they could've made it curvier but also more rounded.

Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, in fact if this was Honda (kinda looks like a mashup of the S2000 and the CRZ to me in some parts) or Toyota then I'd give it a thumbs up.

It also kinda looks like what I'd expect a lowbudget Viper would look like.

I'd expect that it will be a great little roadster. I do wonder if the changes they've made will make it less of a good candidate for engine swaps later (hmm, say in 10 years, swapping the new 6.2L LT1...) though.

Maybe Mazda is trying to cut Toyota to the chase of making a cheap sharp styled roadster and prevent them from making inroads that way. The taillights make me think of the FR-S quite a bit.

Yeah that could be a bad thing. People didn't like it in Porsche. But then it's also early and will take time to improve. I'm sure they'll develop some sort of force feedback thing to transmit roadfeel to the steering wheel to placate people that are focused on that.

But short term, I expect we'll see quite a bit of criticism about it on the Miata. Maybe it helped them shave the weight quite a bit, but I just don't know if it would be worth it to give up the connected feel.

Yeah I could see it being a big benefit for a car like the M5, but for people that feel like the 911 or the Miata are these pure sports cars, I think it will probably not be well liked by their fanbase.

But that and the styling, I'm taking it that Mazda is pushing the Miata to have a more sharp and pointed personality.

It does in every way except a drag race. Which it was never designed or intended to do.

If you want to beat up grandma in her CamCord, there are plenty of blunt instruments better suited to the task.

If you want to experience the pure thrill of driving, in a car that is a telepathic extension of your will, then you want surgical instrument like the MX-5. Top down, heel-toe shifting, and balancing a 4-wheel drift through a corner with the throttle is sublime.

OMFG it looks way sexier than any of the renders. Pleased to see it has a good bit of Alfa sexiness to it.

front end is

rear is meh...

overall, I really like it. makes me want to get one. too bad I have no money

The more I look at the front.. the more I see a catfish. Especially the dead on frontal views. 🙁 I need to see in person.

I like how it looks! I will need a three car garage in a few years... 2013 Accord for daily commuting, 1972 Jaguar XJ6 for weekend drives, and a new Miata for canyon hooning. Future gf/wife/SO's car will have to sit outside. :awe:
