The move to turbos has a lot to do with CAFE requirements. Under WOT turbos are obviously less fuel efficient but in normal day to day driving they are quite efficient. So as 2025 with its 54.5MPG requirement looms, look to see some pretty small engines with turbo and dual turbo setups (along with electric drivetrains to handle stop-and-go).

The Si is going to be pretty sweet with the Type-R finally returning to North America even sweeter.

It's assumed the Si will have the current optional 2.0 engine mated to the 1.5L's turbocharger for an extra .5L of displacement with the Type-R using a tuned version of the 2.0L w/ turbocharger.

The last Civic Type-R in Europe put out 306 HP which is the fastest FWD car to go around the 'Ring to give an idea of what may arrive.

IMO choosing between the Si and I'd figure $5k ante for the Type-R ... I might be more prone for the Type-R since they tend to hold value well ... if you can keep them from getting stolen.

When you're a full second slower in the quarter than the v6 family sedans I'd say 'sporty' is even pushing it.

On my 50 mile commute about 49 miles are Interstate where I don't do a lot of stopping and going.

Having a nimble well-planted ride to me is more sporty than HP, I guess this is why Miata's, S2000's and MR2's and the like are attractive.

If you're a city dweller I can appreciate the attractiveness of pure horsepower, though.

That's not exactly a go-kart to a land yacht though. Going from the BRZ to a 740i is probably a more apt description of what he's talking about. Yeah the 740 has more power but is not going to be the driving experience of the BRZ. The 135i isn't all that far off from the BRZ in terms of handling and driver feel so the extra HP pushes it over the top.

This is why I like the (when they're well done) sound symposer type stuff that a lot of cars have now. They get the additional auditory stimulation, while not bothering everyone around too much

Not sure there is much to gain in a Civic by making the exhaust louder... except annoying your neighbors of course.

I sat in the new Civic at the NAIAS, and wow. I'm really impressed. This is easily the BEST compact car. The exterior styling looks very good, and the interior is great too. I'm liking the amount of power in a Civic (it's as much as you get in the base 4 cyl. Accord!).

The s2000 and mr2 were respectable in acceleration if not blistering when they were new. The latest miata lets just say has mixed opinions if it has enough power in it.

Its not like I'm comparing the civic to some expensive v6 sport luxury car. Its compared to the same make, completely run of the mill family sedan vs the sport version one model down. Its not so much a question if 14 flat or 15 flat is 'fast enough' but that its a pathetic performance from the same make in the same year. I don't think you can claim the civic has the same handling chops as the s2k or miata. Especially now that they've moved away from double wishbone suspensions. What you have is a car is a car that is pretty mediocre in all things I'd consider 'sporty'. Might was well just slap a spoiler on it like some sports editions do and claim that is 'sporty'.

Hehehe, sounds like my old Maxima SE. SE stood for Sports Edition but basically it just had a slightly firmer ride, sway bars and a trunk lid spoiler that did absolutely nothing. It would still smoke a stock Civic Si, even today.

That's why I said when done properly. I don't care for the electronic ones. The (real) induction noise I hear in my ST though... very nice.

Who even needs all of the power that these cars have? The performance of these cars are a real danger to other people on the road. You really need to be in control of that much performance. The incredible amount of horsepower these cars put out should really be regulated. I can't believe our government allows these Civics on the road. They go beyond being street legal.

These Civics are dangerous cars. Don't put your child in one of these and have VTEC kick in. It can cause internal decapitation with that sudden surge of power. You don't want a doctor coming into the waiting room at the hospital to tell you that your son or daughter is now a vegetable. Please, think of the children.
