Because it would become a 2 score game, which would be impossible to overcome with the time remaining.

Impossible? That's simply not true. Certainly it is highly unlikely. If you have the ball you then at least have the chance to score quickly (kickoff return?), get some crazy luck on an onside, and kick a FG. This has happened before.

Clemson would have had the ball with ~2 minutes left and 2 time outs.
