What if the most efficient exhaust design that could be done on the car produced bad sound? In such a scenario, wouldn't the sound generator be preferred over hurting performance by using a different exhaust design just for the sake of "better" sound?

Well except for 2 things,
1. Enthusiasts enjoy a exhaust sound that is in line with maximum efficency and power
2. Even if it weren't the whole thing about sports cars is honesty. Honesty in steering feel and chassis communication and directness in power application. A Miata, F40, 911, M3, are all different but all still share 1 aspect, they all try to be as honest as possible to the drivers about what is going on and with their true attributes, qualitative and quantitative. The whole idea of this is a lot like cosmetic surger versus a woman with natural beauty, and I'll personally pick the real woman every time.
3. There's no excuse to use a cheap, crappy band-aid to cover up an intrinsically flawed design. Do it right or don't bother doing it at all.
