2012 Corvette Z06 laps the 'Ring in 7:22.68

I saw that today, absolutely amazing and since that is only 3 seconds off the ZR1, it really shows how much the magnetorheological suspension is doing for both cars.

It actually shows how much those tires are doing. It looks like the Z06 is maximizing its performance with those cup tires, while the ZR1 with such a slim margin of victory is still having traction issues trying to get the power down on such a technical/rough course. The 3 second advantage was probably gained in the 2 major straightaways.

If I remember correctly the previous Z06 time was from a standing stop start vs rolling start in this one.

ZR1 had a good 10mph on the Z06 on the big straight. I like the Z06 more though as well, if just for spite of the stupid window on the hood of the ZR1.

For the price, is there a better all-out performer than this Z06? That's an amazing time for a car that has been around for a while, albeit with some nice tweaks recently. Imagine getting this car used in 4-5 years! What a steal...

Looking at the videos, it looks like the Z06 even corners better than the ZR1. Where the ZR1 made that gap was on the straightaway, as others have said. That makes sense since the Z06 weighs less.

Amazing performance for the price. Simply amazing. The problem for Chevrolet now is that they pretty much killed all ZR1 sales. Faster on the straightaway, a bit slower on the corners. I can't believe the thing costs $75,000.

EDIT:

Looks like Chevy is BSing us. The car in the video has the Carbon and Performance packages, which combined bring the car to about $100K. The most important thing in making the new car faster, the Michelin Pilot Cup Sport PS2 tires, are missing from the base model. Instead, it comes with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires and they expect you to pony up a huge amount to get them. The new GT-R doesn't look that bad considering its lap time.

If you start with a base Z06, the Carbon package brings the total to $91,030. A 2012 Nissan GT-R starts at $89,950. That's an irrelevant difference in this price range. Realistically speaking, you don't need the Carbon package either. The only "performance" enhancements are a carbon fiber hood, rockers and splitter, the rest are cosmetic changes. Seriously, how much is the weight savings from that really affecting performance? If you skip the Carbon package and just get the Z07 performance package you save about $6000, cutting the price to $84,200. That's a decent $5,500 cheaper than the GT-R.

But then again, the GT-R has a much better interior, which is relevant if you plan on using it as a daily driver or for occasional trips (which many people do).

But I do see where you're getting at.

At this point, the only difference is the supercharger (or lack thereof) right?

I'm not sure. For some reason I thought the chassis was different (ZR1 being heavier) I know the Z06 actually has balsa-wood-composite floorboards and that doesn't sound like something they'd put on the ZR1. ZR1 is supposed to have a lot lower NVH

Z06 has an LS7 engine which is a 7.0 liter high compression motor with titanium connecting rods, valve springs, etc... lots of exotic materials in that engine, it can spin really high, it's underrated from the factory, and it can make a lot more power with just bolt-ons and/or headwork

ZR1 uses the LS9 which is essentially a beefed up LS3 (6.2 liter) with a 2.3 liter supercharger. Very similar to the LSA which is in the CTS-V, but that has a smaller supercharger (1.9 liter).

I would love to own a c6 z06 someday!

The Corvette interior is certainly nothing to write home about, but the GT-R isn't any better. No one is going to buy either car based on the quality of the interior. That said, the GT-R would definitely make the better DD, though it has nothing to do with the interior. As great as those Pilot Sport Cup tires the Z06 has are on the track, they are probably equally bad if not worse on the street.

A 500HP RWD car with tires that don't work when it is cold or wet would make the Z06 w/ Z07 package a piss poor DD in most of the country.

The ZR1 is heavier, but share the same aluminum chasis and magnesium engine cradle. The weight is from the heavier engine, blower, heat exchanger, transmission, rear end and rims/tires.

The Z06 to me is the best track car. Lighter weight and lack of heat soak are two major advantages.

I saw a black Z06 near where I live earlier this week (first one I've ever seen in the UK)

The front looks really low & wide and the overall car looks quite mean. I quite like the look of the Z06. Shame that they're all left hand drive.
