That was a dirty dirty slew foot by Shaw.

If this was the regular season I would imagine he'd get a multi-game suspension given that the new standard is assessing punishment based on the severity of the injury of the opponent.

If the redwings would have won in OT after that call. I would have gone ape shit
gg wings, good run. we'll come back stronger next year no doubt.
Doubt it. This long playoff run may have actually hurt Detroit, as it sort of validates Hollands terrible choices during the last few years IMO.
What choices might those have been?
As far as I can see, we've got a good young team that showed some spirit and should improve over the next few years. We only had one stinker on the ice (Smith), but that was largely due to injuries.
We stand to lose Flippula and Franzen this year, but I don't think those holes are un-fillable.
I ask because a lot of what has gone on in the last two years is directly due to the salary cap. If you're going to complain that he should be maxing out the cap each year, then we'll have to agree to disagree.
Mistakes? Spending a first on Kyle Quincy, also resigning Sammullson and Bertuzzi come to mind.
Semin was out there and could have been had for a 1 year contract. Carolina took him and by all accounts he had a good season.
The younger guys should have been playing full time last year, smith especially.
Salary cap is not the issue. Its more about holding on to relics and not playing the rookies earlier.
Ian White hardly even played. Why not trade him at the deadline then? Same with Cleary and fill. I'm sure some teams would have made offers for them. I don't care about making the playoffs or extending the streak.
Also, Franzen is not going anywhere. He signed for like 10 years or something.
Filpulla is gone, but we could have gotten something for him at the deadline.
I'd keep Cleary even though he is not that good anymore.

My friend has been arguing with me this entire playoffs that Shaw is a clean player. WTF ever.
Yup. I don't have a problem with that play.Hrm. Zetterberg is holding his stick. He shoves Zetterburg. He gets grabbed by the player on the bench AND by the guy behind him. He pulls free then shoves that player down. That player holds onto his arm and pulls him down some too, then holds onto his arm. Zetterberg shoves him like 'get off my guy' when in reality it should be 'get your guy to let go of my arm'.
I'm a wing fan, and while I can see a retaliation penalty on shaw, I see no dirty play there.
I was at the game last night...holy crap that was loud.
The call was crap and simply shows how stupid the refs can be sometimes. It's almost like the refs kick up the stupidity to another level in the playoffs. Granted, there are bad calls on both sides but when it negates a goal there is a heightened emotional response.
Also, since I texted in that Seabrook would be the number one star of the game, I won a free jeresy cause I am that awesome.

A slew foot is one of the dirtiest plays on skates... There's a reason it carries an automatic game misconduct in the rule book.Yup. I don't have a problem with that play.
I disagree. They had Quincey before and he had been a good fit. You forget that at the time, the Wings were leading the Central and looked to be a strong cup contender, but were weak on defense. Draft picks in the NHL are about as far from a sure thing as you can get, so the trade was fairly even.
Bertuzzi has been an asset when he's been on the ice. Sure, he's old, but he played well.
Sammullson was a mistake. No argument.
I hate Smith.... so I'd prefer to see him off the team rather than playing more. That's just me though.
Ian White is a poor player. The Wings would get very little (if anything) for him. You might get a late draft pick if you were lucky. He sucks.
Cleary is old, and is only a so-so player. There's lots of players just like him out there, and you'd likely get nothing for him.
Flippula is the only one who had any real trade value but they wanted him around for this season - they needed him. They would have done better with him in the line up. The only way they would have gotten rid of him last year was if they were firesaleing the whole team away. He's a good player with a dirt-cheap contract. I think they would have been lambasted had they traded him, because they would have gotten a worse player in return.
I don't see a whole lot of mistakes here.
You're right about Franzen. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I typed that 🙂
You can't slew foot someone who is skating hard. And I have seen a few articles about it, yahoo and sportsnet come immediately to mind.
I just don't think it was intentional, it looked like shaw was in a scrum with two guys and they got tangled. Yeah, his leg knocked filp's leg out from under him but it looked to me like it was a result of filp pulling on shaw.A slew foot is one of the dirtiest plays on skates... The only reason Shaw was standing in the spot he was standing was to cause trouble.
Your point? The wings bit on the bait.
