2011 Porsche Cayenne

I have to say I really did not like the looks or the general idea behind the original Porsche Cayenne. Sure the turbo model had an awesome motor but an SUV Porsche...c'mon.

That being said...I have to say I'm actually kind of liking the look of the new 2011 model...I can't believe I'm saying that. You'll never get an SUV to drive like a car...but Porsche has done a hell of a job trying...

I have a sorta love/hate relationship with the Cayenne. Porsche needs the revenue it brings, but it's still hard for me to accept a Porsche SUV

That being said, as the video (sorta) attests to, it's somewhat capable on the track. However, notice how the Cayenne needs every inch of the width of the track.. The 911 just sorta glides through - an ATOT-er with a bit of training could pull decent lap times with a 911. The Cayenne seems like one of those "point it where you want it go and hope it makes it" sorta deals..

I've seen one up in the mountains (I believe a GTS Cayenne? Huge exhaust tips) and the guy driving it was having a blast. It didn't seem very fast though, but a lot of it is driver skill combined with the size of his balls

I've never liked that vehicle. I know, shocking huh? 😛

I just think it's an abomination and it's ugly. It is the quintessential SoCal mommy wagon too.

All true...and I'm actually on the same page as you on it...other than I do think the new one looks a lot better than the old and I'm really amazed what they've gotten this thing to do. I'd never own one though.

No that would be the X5/Range Rover Sport/Tahoe/Suburban/Expedition/GLK/GL

Most of the people I see driving these are usually businessmen or spoiled teenagers.

The problem is, the Cayenne is really designed for almost no one as the people who actually own one don't push them anywhere close to their limits either place.

I don't have a problem with Porsche making an SUV, and if they were going to make one I'd say they did it the right way. It actually makes sense to me, considering how they've gone about cars. The 911 is a joke that they had to overengineer to overcome the fact that they stuck the engine in the back. The Boxster is a joke to me, as again they had to engineer it to overcome the fact that, for being a lightweight mid engine coupe, its not that light weight. The Panamera, again, they had to engineer it into a good car because they start with a big heavy 4 door car (and not only that, but they had to really make it good to make up for the looks).

Don't get me wrong, clearly Porsche's engineering is top notch and their cars are great, but it just seems like they're making it more difficult than it needs to be.

Yeah, the Carrera GT was a well designed Porsche and probably one of the best road cars they've ever made (959 is right up there though) but sadly they don't make it anymore.

The Cayenne is the answer to a question nobody asked.

I shed a tear when the last Air cooled was made. If I had to choose between the old look and new for the Cayanne, I think the old looked better.

Boy, do I love the Cayenne! What other ridiculous SUVs like this are out there?
The SRT8 is the only other that comes to mind, and having either would make me very very happy.
I care not about looks or reliability or even practicality, just something that suffocates you with acceleration in a vehicle that shouldn't be doing it.

One word.

BMWX6M

He's right though...but it's and over-engineered vehicle that I'd be happy to own.

I guess I just view it differently. I find something attractive about the untamed savagery of the rear engine…the way it can come back and bit you hard, of course I am speaking of the 993 and before. The Porsches have been softened and made more user friendly (over-engineered is what you would probably say) since then.

I would love to own one to.

Yeah...drove that at the BMW Experience around the track...that thing is a monster...and I LOVE that engine in M-spec. The sound it made put hair on your chest.

That being said...I hate the X6M...just makes no sense...but it does some unworldly things.

I always thought the Cayenne looked goofy, like someone just jacked up a 911's suspension.

Agreed...I loathed the look of the original...but for some reason the new one is growing on me from a looks perspective. Of course I would never buy one...I'd rather have a Panamera with its hideous rump than drive the Cayenne...but I'm just giving Porsche props for what it has done with the Cayenne...huge improvement over the original (better looking, less weight, etc)
