😕 Why aren't you allowed to get a bike?

Been banned from getting a bike by the wife since our first kid. Even though accidents may usually be caused by inattentive car drivers; my wife also knows how I would ride. 😉

That does allow for more room in negotiating the type of cars we purchase. I've already told her that either a cpo 911TT or new GT-R will on our short-list. 😀

My wife doesn't seem to mind that I ride. She loves me and doesn't want anything to happen to me but she also knows that it is something I really enjoy so she doesn't try to discourage me from riding or buying a new bike every once in a while.

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

my wife talks about trying that......and I remind her that before we got hitched I told her she goes before the bikes.....

Sweet bike if you can afford it. Sticker cost is just the beginning on these bikes. I'd rather just have a run of the mill Japanese bike and enjoy the relatively cheap cost of ownership. Not the kind of bike you'd want to lay down in the corner. Wheels alone would cost probably $2500 minimum to replace.

yeah forged wheels are nice 😀 😀 😀

duc has been good about bringing the cost of maintenance down the last 5 years or so.

Nice bike otherwise.

my friend has the 696 and it's a nice, very flickable bike. Kinda hard to get used to though coming from a japanese bike, you literally sit INSIDE the bike instead of ON the bike. I do prefer the newer 796 instead, which is a few grand cheaper and more practical.

Then again, the Aprilia Shiver looks better imo, while the Triumph Street/Speed Triple is comfi-er than the Duc.

To each his own. I personally think it looks badass. Then again I'm looking to buy a bike with two bigass headlights in the front and antenna stalks for mirrors.

IMO, I think european bikes just look better than their jap counterparts. Just something about them makes them seem better. Maybe because they're all a bit different. Triumph has their 3-cylinders, Ducati has their beefy twins, Aprilia is kinda one of those bikes that makes everyones mouth water, BMW is known for their sport touring bikes and now an awesome liter racebike.

Looks like they're [the japanese] the ones playing catchup these days as you see them coming out with standard "naked" bikes to compete with the Triumphs and Ducatis.

I haven't laid down my current bike and I've owned it for almost 3 years now and 14,000 miles...or the bike I owned prior for that matter. That's no reason to buy or not buy a bike IMO.

Maintenance isn't as bad as you think on the new Ducatis either. At least not on these air cooled Monsters.

I'd still like to keep my current bike though. We'll see if I can make that happen when the time comes. The Monster 1100 EVO won't be available here in the states until May.

the shiver is my dream daily bike.....

I've ridden the Monster, two different ones in fact, a 2009 Monster 1100 S and a 2007 Monster S4R. I found both to be very comfortable.

The Aprilia Shiver is a nice bike but it is kind of underpowered and a lot heavier compared to the Ducati. Also, Aprilia dealer support can be spotty, we just had an Aprilia dealer fold here. Aftermarket is kind of weak too.

I like the new Speed Triple but the Ducati just speaks to me. I like the way it looks and sounds.

Pretty tough to drink your coffee, talk on your cellphone, do your makeup, or any of the other dumbass things drivers do when you're on a motorcycle.

JM for Director of Department of Transportation!

Try shaving with a full face helmet on... it's a bastard!

Great bike Jules. Have you seen any tests of the ABS?

No, I haven't. I'll check that out later though for sure.

What's the gist of this? I read some of the comments and see the usual idiots are spewing their hatred for ABS on motorcycles for the usual reasons. I'm Valentino Fucking Rossi and I can outbrake any ABS system because I'm a racer and always ride 10/10th everywhere I go...I don't need that nanny system kicking in and increasing my stopping distances...ABS takes control away from the rider and makes you a worse rider...blah blah blah. It's all nonsense. ABS is great for street bikes.

10/10th?

100%...basically no margin for error because you are pushing to the very limit of man and machine (basically nobody on the planet rides like this, not even at track days, except Valentino Rossi of course).

I do it in my sleep! In my dreams my lines are perfect, the bike falls perfectly into place, and I drag a knee on every corner.

Basically he tests the braking distances of the new ABS version against his long term 1100S Monster. The ABS version kicks his arse.

I would agree that ABS is an excellent tool for street riding, especially in tricky conditions (which are the predominant ones in the UK).

Wow. Just...wow. That is a huge difference in stopping distance with ABS vs. no ABS.

I would also agree that ABS on a street bike is a very good thing. The average street rider would probably panic brake and definitely benefit from it.

Call me when it comes in with a sr4 motor.

Needs more ponies.

100 will not cut it.. I left behind the 100hp bikes long ago.
