I watched this movie again recently and had forgotten how much I liked it. I know, it is a mere shadow of '2001 - A Space Odyssey' but if nothing else it has Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, and Helen Mirren in it and it gives a short look into what we thought the future might hold from the point of view of the early 1980s. Kind of interesting to see where we thought we would be then compared to where we are now. Then of course there's the whole Soviet/US cold war aspect to the movie.

It is visually impressive though and the story is touching at the end when HAL sacrifices himself for the humans who created him.

Overall, I really like this movie...it stands on its own IMO.
