I'm trying to do a clean install of os x on this machine. I have a new hard drive hooked up inside. When I plug in the recovery hard drive with a clean image of OS X it will go a little bit up the progress bar and then the entire machine will shut down.

What is going on?

Do you still have a drive with OS X installed on it?
Was this a problem that it was exhibiting before?

I'd try to boot from an OSX DVD or flash drive equivalent, something could be wrong with the recovery hard drive.

I've tried two recovery hard drives so far.

My friend says that I have to hold down command-r the entire time during he install which I think is pretty ridiculous but might explain it all. Otherwise, I am thinking either a main board or RAM problem

Now I'm stuck with, "to download and restore OS X your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple" upon which it returns an error

If you have an external drive with OS X on it you can log into the app store and download another installer. Or use a deployment image. We have images for 10.8, 10.9, and 10.10 that can simply be placed onto the drive and it's much faster.

You DO NOT have to hold down CMD+R the entire time. That's crazy talk.
