Well, F me. Leaking fluid around the rack and pinion boot. 3900 miles. Obviously it's going back to the dealership tomorrow but this really pisses me off. My mechanic says insist on a new rack and pinion. I don't know squat about vehicle mechanics. Opinions?

Maybe the damn thing will catch on fire.

Shit happens.

Every car line will have some problems, mind you I am not a fan of Toyota trucks. Take it back and let them fix. Usuaully it will require that they replace the rack unless they have someone there that rebuilds them. The outbound seal is probable the problem and requires a lot of work to pull apart. So I doubt they will rebuild it.

Agreed. Get it fixed under warranty and you should be good to go. Of course this is only anecdotal...but I've had my Tacoma for 60K miles and 5.5 years...and haven't had an issue yet that wasn't normal maintenance. I haven't even had to do my brakes yet.

Agree but screws with my schedule. (weak rant) When then put the tow package on, I was clear about being self employed and needing to be in my office. Said I would bring it any time/day they chose. They said 1.5 hr tops and no I didn't need/wouldn't get a loaner. Get there at 7:30am, left at 1:00pm. This go round, I'll insist on the loaner.

Good news on the replacement. Thanks.

Friend of mines in '07 with 85K miles, same story as you. Oil and tires.

Exactly! I have to say that the overall "quality" of my 2005 Toyota Tacoma did not match the other Toyota I had (92' Camry), but so far over 5.5 years, the reliability has been great. Of course, talking about reliability on a modern car with only 60K is laughable. My Camry did well until my family got rid of it (I gave it to my sister) with 290K miles. Sure things had to be replaced like the radiator and a few other things...but the car still worked well in the end and had a very low cost of ownership. Sadly I'm not sure I'll be able to test my truck out in the same fashion.

Just find a wall and head straight towards it.
You going to be standing there?:sneaky:

Took it in yesterday a.m. They said it's the p.s. pump leaking. Hope they are right because I want it fixed but I trust my mechanic more than I do them. I'll be leaving shortly to take it back for the replacement.

Gotta love Toyota and their shit quality on all of their new stuff.
I hope they learn from their mistakes. Never been a fan of the brand as far as desirable cars. They used to be solid, reliable, tools, but now it seems like they aren't even that.

But they still have good resale! Sell the piece of trash for what you paid for it and get something else?

3900 miles. Might could.

Back from the dealership. Under 1.5 hr like they told me. Miracle of miracles. Let's hope it was the pump.

:D

I took my Mazda 3 to a tire place. They PS pump froze. The guy told me to take it to the dealer because it is a common problem and should be fixed. I took it to my mechanic down the street. He verified and said it would cost him $1200 to fix because it also required replacing the hoses, which are very cheap quality on the Mazda 3. I brought it to the dealer....they said...."nope, no problem at all. Who are you going to believe, your mechanic or us". Yeah, by my past history with Mazda dealerships, I am gonna go with my mechanic. 20,000 miles later and 6K after warranty, I finally got customer Service involved. It's to bad that Customer Service does not follow up, because the dealership keeps saying that corporate has not reached out to them.....so I keep having to reschedule.

Update: Monday 6/14/10 my new power steering pump (replaced 6/9) is whining AND fluid is dripping, a lot, from under the engine. Back to the dealership in the a.m. Any bets on my mechanic vs. toyota service dept.? Still, I get no loaner. Bastards.

What's the lemon law in your state? You might be able to get a new truck on the dealer's dime if the service department keeps playing these games.

IIRC it's 4 attempts on the same problem. But I think they can fight that one for a long time. 4K miles is new so I might would rather have my $$ back. Let you know tomorrow what the new diagnosis is.

Not getting a loaner is unacceptable, I got one for VW replacing a window switch (that I broke, lol) and that only took 2 hours.

Since I own it, that's a plus if I dump it soon. Takers?

Off to the dealership shortly.

Maybe so...although I've had 0 issues with mine (2005). 60K miles...haven't even had to replace the brakes. Just changed the spark plugs and the engine runs as smooth as the day I bought it. So while we're basing it on anecdotal evidence...I think they are the most underrated vehicle on the planet.

Surprise. I'm baaaaack.........after only 2 hrs. Banjo fitting on the ps pump was bad. Whatever the hell that is. Don't know if one came with the new pump but my guess is that they used the old one which would be a no no.

Still waiting on the rack and pinion.

Good thing this is a Jap truck. If you had said it was a GM/Dodge/Ford everyone and their mother would say how much of a pile of shit it is.
Toyota Quality is a myth. They have screw ups just like everyone else. It just happens that Toyota trumps everyone in the terms of their failures.
