2010 GMC Terrain unveiled

Yay...another gas guzzling shoe box.

GMC is moving into the burgeoning compact crossover market with its brand new Terrain, which debuts this week at the New York Auto Show. GM will once again be touting the vehicle?s impressive fuel-economy, especially for the base 2.4L model, which is packed with a number of features to help reduce fuel consumption.

The compact crossover receives a fresh new look for 2010, characterized by bold, muscular fender flares, representing GMC?s new design theme. Surfacing is angular yet refined, with a strong and capable front-end appearance with squared-off edges.

Additional design features include a unique, three-element grille that is accented by chrome surrounds and projector-beam headlamps mounted in large, rectangular housings splashed with more chrome.

A new 2.4L four-cylinder engine that features direct injection is expected to deliver best-in-segment highway fuel economy of 30mpg (7.8L/100km), but to achieve this drivers will need to activate the vehicle?s ?ECO? model. At the push of a button, the Terrain?s torque converter in the automatic transmission lowers the lockup speed to 1,125rpm to help save fuel.

Also available will be a 3.0L direct injected V6 delivering 264hp (197kW). Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and are offered with either FWD or AWD configurations.

The Terrain will also be equipped with a number of features, including a rear vision camera, powered liftgate, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and MP3 playback, a seven inch LCD display and hard-drive satnav system, as well as standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio.

Production will be handled at GM?s CAMI assembly plant in Ontario, Canada, with first sales to start in the middle of the year. Also on show at this week?s New York event will be the GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid SUV.

30mpg... wahoo!

I'll believe it when I see it...in real world driving situations.

Edit-If they can achieve it then kudos to GM. Of course, it will still be just another shoe box instead of just another gas guzzling shoe box. 😛

better than an IS250

Our IS250 gets 32+ on the freeway...and it doesn't look like a big ugly shoe box. 😛

ah, but if we use the COMPARABLE EPA ratings, yours only gets 29 highway in a rwd, 6spd auto setup... and comparing fuel economy between different drivers and locations, is not possible, only EPA ratings should ever be combined.

I'm talking real world freeway driving with a vehicle that has actually rolled off an assembly line.

You can compare ratings AFTER your car reaches production and has been tested in real world driving situations. Until then, you might as well claim it will give you blow jobs every day for the rest of your life.

will not get 30mpg in actual driving...
and i can't imagine that tank and guzzler 2.4L 4 cyliner engine. thats retarded. might as well put bicycle pedals on it and give lifetime supply of redbull to the driver.

so.. GMC Terrain = Equinox? making 2 cars; getting half profit!

Guzzler 2.4L engine? So basically, you're trying to say that its low powered but yet it is un-economical? I wish you'd have anything coherent and logical to say. You don't know the vehicle, have no stats on it or any real world reviews from people who purchased the car.
And in all fairness, domestic engines are really good in fuel efficiency. If there's one area that domestics really excel in and that is in trucks.
BTW, you really ought to give credit when its due and stop being a blatant Honda/Toyota/import fanboy.

People are getting this huge shoebox instead of something like an IS250 because the IS250 probably can't do everything the shoebox can do. Just a guess. Given the similar rated gas mileage, people would rather have the practicality. Just a guess.

also better than a lotus

Lois is right in this aspect though , rebadging is costing GM some $ and killing brands should be their game.

GMC should become the truck SUV division, Chev for cars and Cadillac for upscale just roll the nicer Buicks into Caddy as the low end of the brand.
close 1\3 of their dealers maybe more

On topic, I like the look of it and looks like FE is really a priority these days

The main detractor from fuel economy is not the engine, but the car around it. The massively unaerodynamic design of the Terrain means that the engine will be revving quite high even while cruising at 60mph, and the huge mass-to-torque ratio means that 0-60 times are going to suck. Were there a turbo to temporarily boost torque, this might be another story, but there isn't.

This reminds me of when Mazda put a tiny RX-7 Wankel in a giant Holden Kingswood.

I had a 4 banger Ranger that would pull near 30mpg on the highway, & it was as aerodynamically unfriendly as this thing.

The real test will be how does it do with 4-5 people on board merging on the freeway, etc...

The newer SUVs are still less aerodynamic than cars for sure but they are much better than they used to be. The front grill designs that they have been moving to, especially the lower front bumpers, helps quite a bit. Also, those lower bumpers make the cars safer during accidents with smaller vehicles. I don't think 30 mpg is impossible in a small SUV.

I thought they're giving up on the badge engineering business?

errr n/m I was thinking of a different car, the Equinox doesn't look anything like it.
That being said, I'm not feeling the design.
