Fry's has 200GB Western Digital Special Edition 8MB Cache hard drive for $199.99 before $70 mail in rebate.

199.99 - 70 MIR = $129.99 plus tax. Comes out to $146.49 for me with tax. About .73 cents per GB.

Which Fry's is this? I saw something on TB about this deal in the Bay Area, but didn't notice at the SJ Mercury ad web site.

Does this guy have the 3 year warranty or the more standard (these days) 1 year warranty? My impression was that the Special Edition drives have the 3 year warranties, in which case, this is a reasonably toasty deal. if you need a pile of drive space. On this sucker I could back up every OS I have (mostly a bunch of Linux distros).

1. It is Fry's / Outpost # 3483523, which inkara has linked above.

2. retail boxed with 3 year warranty.

It should. Windows 2000 SP3 does ... though I had to set this Registry key in order to get it to recognize the entire drive:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters]
"EnableBigLba"=dword:1

Not sure if it is required on Windows XP though.

It's not, as long as you apply SP1
