Just got back from the local B&M Best Buy and they have a sale going on till the end of the month on the 160GB Special Edition (8mb buffer) Western Digital Harddrives. Normally $199.99, but now w/ a $70 and a $30 MIR. Now of the 10 drives I looked at ALL of them were 200GB!!! That's around $.50 a GIG!!! Also comes with a free Ultra ATA controller card. YMMV but definitely be on the lookout.

HOT or NOT?!?

They're packaged in a clear plastic box, flip it over and you can read the label clearly on the back. Model Number WD2000JB

Can anyone confirm this in the bay area, CA. Would hate to drive down to BB all the way and come back empty handed.

BTW current hot deals on big drives

Frys 160 GB WD 8 megs= 89.99 AR
CC 120 GB rebadged WD 8 megs = 69.99 AR

This would really be hot, if its truly a sheep(200 GB) in a wolves(160 GB) disguise :)

The UPC code is on the box packaging, and it definitely points to the 160GB drive. You really have to check and make sure, but DANG, 200gb for $100 is great

I just got the OfficeMax deal.
WD 120gb 8mb SE retail box w/ 3 year warranty for $67 after rebates.
$159.99 - $30 staples "30 off 150" - $50 WD rebate - $20 OM rebate = $67 after tax.

Good until 9/13/03.

yeah I did this last week, hence I cant do it this week.

I've already have gotten burnt with a 120 $ rebate form WD from DELL. Had bought it on the 1st and the 25th of June and WD claims that it was the same promotion which was limit one per person. Was kinda pissed but had to move-on, after that I am very cautious on the rebate periods and WD is notorious for running the same promo for months.

All my devices are hungry for disk space, my RAID, my xbox, my replay tv, my external HD case (2), my other computer. I just dont seem to have enough disk space...

Anyways did anybody else get on this BB promo ? $100 for 200 is HOT !!!

No reason to worry. The capacity label and UPC are all that matter for rebate purposes.
It doesn't matter what's in the box.

I checked out the Best Buy near me and the drives there where 160. With the new plastic cases, it is really easy to see what actual drive is inside. Would have been nice to find a 200.

Are the drives really 200GB or are they just mislabeled? They could be really 160GB drives with incorrect 200GB labels. Has anyone who has purchased verified the size after installing the drive?

These probably are 200gb drives. Western Digital has done this many times with other drives...for awhile the 80gb drives were actually 100gb drives......

I looked at the 160gb and 200gb (se) drives at the bb web site and both show to be 2mb. How could I make sure I would be getting the 8mb drive???

If you look at the drive inside of the box then near the top it should have either WD1600 or WD2000...this should confirm the size for you.

As for the 8MB cache...I believe these will have a model number of either WD2000JB or WD1600JB. I believe the letter "J' is the key for an 8MB drive.

This is confirmed :

My best buy in kennesaw, ga has them.

Talk to the people in the dept about checking 'top stock' (drives on top of the rows , 'overstock')

We had one left on the shelf, and I didn't check top stock.

So.. I'm looking at it.. model #wd200jb-00dua0

I paid $170 with a $70 mail in rebate (I'm an employee, so I get the manufacturers $70 rebate, but not the $30.. but employee cost is $171 anyway..)

Another confirmation here!

The BB in Madison Heights, MI has a few more. The employees are aware of it, and are pointing it out to the customers. :)

Got the last one from the Dearborn, MI Beast Buy. Only a lone 160-gigger left on the shelf.

Extra bonus - an ATA card is included!!

ATHD strikes again!

Picked up one at the Henrietta NY store, still had about 10 or so left on the shelf, all of them 200gigs. Excellent deal. Thanks!
