200GB HD--Windows sees only 138 gigs?

I am trying to partition a 200gb seagate hard drive in windows XP. However, XP is indicating that the total space I have on the drive is 138gb (or something similar).

Any ideas what the problem could be?

Thanks.

Install Service Pack 1 or 2.

You can do so through Windows Update.

As jpeyton suggested, a Windoww update should do the trick. If not, check that your BIOS is up to date- if your mobo is older, your current BIOS might not have 48-bit LBA support (which is needed for larger drives).

Windows Update will *not* do the trick.

If your mobo manufacturer has a BIOS that supports larger drives, do that. However, I don't know of any that do support the larger drives yet.

You need the card. Install of XP will treat it as a SCSI (hit F6 right at the beginning). You'll be good to go from there.

I had a similar problem ages ago when 120GB+ HDDs first hit the scene.

Fixed it by firstly getting the right update for windows (which i believe comes as standard now as part of SP1 and SP2) and also by installing the latest Intel drivers for my motherboard chipsets. Had to do both in order to get windows to recognise my 180GB HDD.

Hope that helps.
