I think we all know by now that this is not a problem with a single builds of these displays. This is a problem with the whole 2007 series from Dell. Hence why i sent mine back and got a full refund, versus playing the exchange game. I'll save myself and UPS the hassle and play wait and see what Dell does.
It seems to me that the S-IPS is also an opportunity and a good value. An alternative to the banding problem is the VGA port. At least one person mentions good results, indistinguishable from DVI and better for banding. Others mention that the DVI is necessary for dual input reasons.
Most people probably don't need dual inputs. Have those having problems tried the VGA input with good cables assuming they have a good analog video output (i.e. not crummy old built-in graphics)? Have they found the quality to be good or bad? Distinguishable from DVI? How?
I fully understand this is not a global solution, nor acceptable to a lot of people. But inexpensive S-IPS panels aren't exactly commonplace, and this might be an acceptable compromise for some people.

Whoa, nice! Look back through the thread to find instructions for accessing the service menu-- do that and it should specify which panel the monitor you have uses. I guess that'll tell us if they dumped the LG-Phillips S-IPS panel, though I don't see them making a change like that thsi quick... hopefully this means there's a non-hardware solution to the issue.

Another guy then says, "He just checked. Good news: It is still a LG S-IPS panel in the 2007wfp. LPL = LG Panel which means S-IPS."
I'm going to get him to try gradlin. That should be the benchmark that we're all looking for. Although he's lives down under so I don't know what that means for people in the US.

Notice it also has 8 hours on the clock. Sounds like it was returned banding model that got retuned by the service dept, I wonder if this is something that can be done in the service menu or something more invasive.

2007WFP Banding?
That's my 2007WFP. The banding is most distinct in the gray, less so in the green. Negligible in blue and red. Honestly, though, I had to turn my brightness up to 100% (I usually keep it on 40%). And I had to close all the blinds in the room.
And it still doesn't look nearly as bad as some of the other posts around here. I would be inclined to say that there's some panel variation here. (Or eye variation).

I've been switching back and forth between VGA and DVI using a heavy shielded VGA cable from a GF FX 5700 - I can't tell any difference at all in text or sharpness or color in games, the internet or the desktop.
Outside of the gradient tests, I'm not noticing banding at all - but I'm not doing photo work either.
My guess is that whomever said they got a 2007 w/no banding jumped the gun.
I'm still waiting to see what this person's results were with the gradient test, as they had run no tests at the time of their post.
The only good news i can see so far is that a mod over at the Dell forums has stated the issue is being looked into.

I would say All dells 2x07 panels are screwed. I just got a new Dell 2007 fp.
It is now a samsung panel.
It still has copious banding.
And there is slight ghost/blur above letters.
In short it is piece of garbage. More detail to follow.

Well Aside from the banding, I think I like the 2007fp better than I liked the 2405. It has a much tamer level of brightness. No matter what I did with the 2405 I always experienced eyestrain, no problem with the 2007fp.
Plus if the angular tone shift of PVA bothers you, it will be much more annoying in widescreen as the sides are always at an angle.

Hard to photograph, but this shot is representative. This is perfectly smooth on my CRT, RGB input to the Dell improves it a bit but not by as much as I would have thought.
This shot was done in RAW mode, and converted to TIFF then saved as PNG. So no lossy compression was used anywhere producing the image. This is essentially what I see when looking at a gradient.

Spronkey: Yours was harder to photograph but the effect on the top lines was the same, Also I could really spot no visual difference between dithered and non dithered part. They both banded in essentially the same place. Not much banding elsewhere. I don't think this one is as bad as the WFP's.

Got the 2007fp yesterday(in Canada)
Running the gradlin-v0.2-fs shows lots more banding when using DVI than VGA.
When using VGA, the Red and Blue show none(unless I look very very very close), green and grey show some on the left half of the bar.
Also I noticed the menus are different for dvi and vga. The dvi does not have as many "display settings" options.
Using 6800GS card.
i am from canada too, just got my replacement, it is the second 2007fp i receive and still banding on dvi. I think it is clear that the problem is for all the 20x07 model. I do photo retouching and dvi is a problem but the vga quality seem to be as good as the dvi, so maybe i will keep it and use it on vga when it will be necessery i think it is a compromise for me, i like every aspect of this monitor colors are very good.
I would like to be able to ask a replacement when dell will correct the problem but i am not sure they will and i am not sure it is possible to ask this...

Yeah, people scoffed earlier in the thread when I suggested using vga to minimize the banding yet still enjoy the otherwise fantastic performance of this panel, but nobody has claimed vga is yielding in any respect a lower quality image.

In terms of day to day daily usage, what implications does gradient banding have on enjoyment and use of the monitor? If it doesnt make a different for normal applications or gaming, is it something to worry about?

I will claim that.
On my Dell 2405 which had an excellent DVI input. Going to VGA did degrade performance, you get a bit of shadow around text and a riging/echo signal type ghost.
Now on my 2007fp which has a crappier DVI that already has a bit of shadow on text, it is a bit harder to notice the degradation. But You do see a bit of ringing/echo signal type ghost.
Small effects but they are there. Also using cleartype was noticably worse on the VGA connector as well.
