Does the last sentence here mean it it gives the option to disable it in Desktop mode only, or all three (while only Desktop mode is disabled by default)?

What about the controversy about having the S-IPS switched to PVA? I'm not exactly sure what these things are, but from the description of their features, I'd rather have S-IPS. Also, I read either in that long Dell Community thread, or in another, that Dell started with S-IPS, but quietly replaces it with PVA later on. Can some confirm which one it has?

Edit: Btw, this new thread is basically being used to message ChrisM to get on the list for the fix. People are speculating the wording meant it was only for Desktop mode and there's still nothing confirmed on what exactly this Faroudja video processor does (there's a possibility it might severely degrade it's original spec performance), which is why I'll continue to hold off buying it until it's all straightened out...either by Dell or from those who ordered and get the fix.

So far, I believe all the 2007FPW's are still S-IPS, but the 2007 FP and 2407FPW have already switched to PVA. I'm not 100% sure about this as Dell can change the panel at any time, but I've yet to read or hear anything to the contrary to this.
 
I don't think anything will be degraded turning off Faroudja. It is used in Scaling video. So scaling video games from lower resolution in desktop mode may not work at all. Or it may scale but look terrible.


A lot of panel swaps happen. The 2001fp was S-IPS then later switched to PVA, now the 2007fp went from S-IPS to PVA. Some other manufacturers do this as well.

I bought the 2007fp and it had the pva panel which I didn't like and I won't buy another because of it. I wanted and was expecting a S-IPS panel.

AFAIK the 2007wfp has not changed. It still has S-IPS.

The 2405/2407 has always been PVA. There are no 24" S-IPS panels to the best of my knowledge. The 23" monitors are the S-IPS Screens.
 
Holy Moly!!

By father in law bought a Dell 2007FP and I hooked it up to my laptop (VGA) and ran the gradlin VB program. Easily the worst banding I've ever seen on any LCD, inlcuding all 6-bit displays. It doesn't effect real-life usage all that much, but the Daily Tech side bars look pretty bad, as do some 3D greyscale maps. Besides this issue, the mopnitor is very nice. Hope they have an easy fix for it.

I would wait until someone actually reports on the fix preferably someone in these forums who already had one or more problematic panels, and preferable someone who could also see the text blur problem.

Then they can report that the fix does cure banding, and report wether anything else is impacted, and importantly report whether text blur is fixed.

Also reports from Dell forum monderator Chris says if you buy new today you will get old firmware and have to send it back to fix it if you are annoyed by banding.

yeah.. i just spent like an hour reading this thread and also the thread on dells forum..
 
I just recieved my 2007WFP from Dell that I ordered through the hot deals forum. It ended up costing me $349.50 after tax and shipping to Maryland, which seemed like a good price. I am using it as my main display with my Gateway FPD2185W in clone mode, both are using DVI inputs. The Dell has way more banding then the Gateway, and I also noticed it has much more of a screen door effect. I am not sure if it just my eyes being picky, but that was one complaint I had with the 2185W, and the Dell is worse. I played both FarCry and BF2 last night and while I didn't notice any banding in game, the colors seem to be much more washed out compared to the Gateway. I know that some may argue that I am comparing a $350 monitor with a $600 monitor, but I figured since I had both here why not try. I think I am going to keep the Dell over the weekend, but it is problably going back Tuesday, to be replaced with a Samsung 215tw. Swapping monitors is becoming a major PITA. I cant keep the Gateway as I have been through four of them and the buzzing sound drives me crazy.
 
So the fix is finally here 🙂 Since I do not experience the text bluring, only color banding which mostly occurs when watching dark movies or grey screens in games, I will simply wait and see if this fix will deal with this. I am very skeptic about trading for a PVA screen and will only do so if it fixes the problem once and for all. I doubt it though, since most of the problems have been noticeable when watching movies, not playing games. So let me know what happens and we will see. Thanks for all the informative posts, its been really helpfull.
 
I guess I owe you guys an appolgy. I thought that all of you complainning wouldn't do anything. It is nice that Dell listens to you. I might just put them back on my monitor shopping list.
 
I think the difference this time vs the complaints about backlight bleed is that this is a simple firmware flash. Also every panel was affected vs backlight bleed where there was variability. I don't know if we suceeded in making more noise than the backlight bleed. In the there was little Dell could do about backlight bleed. The don't build the physical panel itself. That was LG and everyone using that panel had that issue.

But we still don't know if all the current issues are fixed. Including text blur. Dell has been silent on this part, and if you ask the question on their forums, they ignore you. So I will reserve a positive justice until someone with text blur reports a successful patch.

The backlight bleedthrough has a lot to do with how its put together. Apple's monitors didn't really have issues with backlight bleeding like Dell's did.

Unless I hear a unanimous response that this has resolved the color banding and that the loss of the the faroudja image processing is negligible, I won't even be considering these new Dell's until there is evidence that they've changed some of the hardware. Its a shame since I personally like the new look over the older models.
 
Hi all
I'm in Perth Western Australia.
Just got my new 2007WFP yesterday (part of a system order).

Of course I hooked it up (almost) immediately and was I ever surprised to discover no banding in desktop mode! That's right - using a range of the test graphics from this forum I can clearly see banding in multimedia & gaming modes, but the desktop mode is smooth.

My order was placed on May 15 and left the factory May 18. Does that mean that the firmware fix was already available 2 weeks ago? I doubt that it was updated when it reached Australian customs 🙂

For reference its the LG panel, the model is A00 and its running from DVI off an NVidia 7900GS gfx card. There's no other info in the service menu that gives a clue to the updated firmware.

I am glad that it worked out for you, and it seems like the update is actually working. It also seems promising that you got a S-IPS screen. That is the only thing I have any objections too, since I don't want a PVA one.
 
What the heck, just read the blog you posted MaceX. "While it's possible to do a firmware upgrade on the existing monitors, Dell instead plans to simply replace the monitors of unhappy customers." If this is true this is truely annoying, curse on you Dell 🙂
 
Sorry for the bump, but can someone confirm (with a link to the manual / tech specs / whatever) whether or not the Dell 200fpw's are S-IPS panels or P-MVA's?

Why / when did they change them, and is there any way to get a specific one from Dell? I don't want to oder one of these only to find out it doesn't have the panel that I want.
 
The 2007WFPs should all be S-IPS.
The 2007FPs are either S-IPS or S-PVA. Dell uses both to get a better price, and I don't think that they'll tell you which one you're going to get.

by any chance if u do have A01 can u take some pics of it using gradlin?

Actually I think it is more the case of Dell starting with S-IPS and switching over to PVA, not so much random mix and match. There may be a few S-IPS old stock working it's way through the system, but I think right now, chances are 99% that anyone getting a 2007fp will get a PVA.

Note they sort of did the same thing with the 2001fp, but only at the end. If you have a very late run 2001fp, chances are it is PVA, while most of the run was S-IPS.

The 2007wfp has never had a PVA and has always been S-IPS, just like the 2005fpw has always been S-IPS. Of course this is subject to change without notice.
 
Will do, sadly after plying Half-Life 2 I have experienced more grading than I would care for, so this monitor is going to be "fixed"

Would you reccomend going ahead and buying one despite the issues? I mean, as long as Dell intends to fix the issues, I'm really not all too concerned about banding in the short term.. but my chances to get it for $390 are slowly coming to an end...
 
I would say go ahead, for the price its offered and since the fix seems to be working it will be a hard beat to find a better deal anywhere.
