I was browsing Ebay motors and was surprised to see 2006 M5 prices in the low $60s. It seems I can pretty much get pristine loaded M5 with around 20k miles or less for high 50s low 60s no problem. Given that this car was $90-100k new, that's a quite a steep depreciation on a 2 year old M car. This definitely peaked my interest.

No thanks, I can get an E55 for 45-50K CPO. Torque monster and it's faster than the M5 I believe.

Not to mention super easy modding if your into that.....

The E55 AMG is faster in a straight line than the E39 M5...0-60 times are about 3/4-1 second quicker on the Benz. However, the BMW excels at handling the twisties, whereas the E55 would just slide its tail out like crazy with all of that torque feeding the rear wheels. If you've seen the recent Top Gear comparison of the C63 AMG and the M3, you'll have a pretty good idea of the E55's handling characteristics compared to the E39 M5.

Personally, it would be down to the M5 or RS6. Both are priced in the 30-45k range for a used model with relatively low mileage, but the Audi's got more power, twin turbos, and AWD.

I'm actually talking about the newer W211 E55 ( I know its crazy how cheap they are now), those old W210 E55's (1998-2003) can be had for low to mid 20's and are a bargain BTW but like you said, its slightly less car than the E39 M5 from a drivers stand point, but usually a lot cheaper (5-10K).

The Benz is a better car day to day, the M5 is better for a weekend car.

I saw one listed with 19K miles for $69,000 from a dealer. On a percentage basis, the depreciation isn't that bad. But when you spend a lot from the start, that percentage makes for a big chunk of change. On a percentage basis, the 7-series is probably the worst. You can get current-gen 7-series for under $30,000. This is also true for the A8 and S-class. I think it's just that the market for that type of vehicle are usually people who can actually afford the new one. Not many younger people want those big saloons, so the used value falls faster than it would otherwise.

Tired of the Vette already?

My neighbor just bought a new M5. Seeing as how he's a 21 year old painter in Sacramento, Im thinking the Russian mob had something to do with it.

Owning a painting business can bring in a lot of dough, you'd be surprised.

Or it could be he is like a lot of other people who finance or lease way more car than they can afford.

not that i dislike the E60 or anything... i think both are beasts but the E39 is more stealthy...

I think I ruined my pants :p

TBH I don't know, the Bangel era BMW designs have started to grow on me little by little. I just hope things don't change too much all the sudden again when I am in a position to buy an M5 a couple of years down the road.

Although for the money I would sure as hell jump on an E39 rather than an E60, however the CSE in me is being tempted by the callings of the overly complex and heavily customizable iDrive system and gadgetry :D

I like the E39 but I think 2006 is the better buy and car. My cousin has the '02 or '03 M5 with little over 30k miles. I can't remember which year. It's for sale so if I wanted it, I could get it at a very good price.

No, I haven't driven it enough to get tired of it yet. It's only got 1,800 miles on it and it'll be a year next week. :( Between running my business and playing with my daughter, it's hard to find time to drive the car for pleasure. 2 seats makes it impossible to transport my wife and daughter. Even though I love it the rare occasion I get to drive, I'm thinking maybe another car would serve our needs better. I'm thinking about maybe consolidating my vehicles. Currently I've 4 cars and one motorcycle. I'm thinking of maybe getting rid of the Vette and my Tundra truck. Truck is my backup work vehicle and I put less than thousand miles a year the last two years. Even fewer miles than the vette. :(

If I replaced both with a M5, then I would use it more since all of us would fit. Wife would still drive the minivan and it'll still serve as the primary kid transporter. Minivan would serve as my backup work vehicle in case my cargo van is in the shop. I could drive the M5 on the weekends and evenings with the family. Of course I would keep the motorcycle. 3 cars with a backseat would also give me the flexibility to add another sports car later on. Right now I don't have the garage or driveway space for another vehicle even if I wanted one.

Dude, not to act like I know your business more than you, however we all know very well that you are in one of the most perfect of positions to jump on an M5 deal right now and get rid of the cars that you don't use. Why have so many cars that you pay insurance for and take up valuable parking space and not use?
A 4 door monster sedan that is safe for the family and not so safe for you when you want it to be ;) is the best way to go.

I mean, personally, even though I don't have kids and a wife ATM and I sure would go for an M5, an E39 is just at such a sweet price right now, but if you can easily afford an E60 after getting rid of the Vette and the pickup and stuff why not :)
And the best part is that your cousin has one ready to go, he can hold on selling it while you make space and you know it's a clean car with no issues....

It's just that I personally hate garage queens. I like to have a practical everyday car. If I get my dream car (something along the lines of an E60 M5) I would drive the hell out of it, and M5's just love to be abused ;)

Every option has pros and cons. The problem with the E39 is that it's a stick so my wife wouldn't be able to drive it. That's a problem if my cargo van needs repair and I need to take the minivan to work. My wife wouldn't be able to take my daughter to school then and do what she needs to do. E60 would work since it's an auto but it's more money.

My current setup works so it's probably best to stay put for now but when you see deals popping up everywhere, it gets your thought process working and gets you thinking.

same with any high end car like this and why you see them so often about 2-3 years after release. The S55 AMG's are like that now.

Sorry, this sounds way better than the Coffee Can Edition M5.

Agreed.
