Obviously they fold upright when passengers actually sit in the seat.

volvo have done that for awhile now. there is just a button the driver can push to lower them, but you have to raise them manually.

it's kinda a pita sometimes for people in the back, because if they don't notice they are down, they hit their neck/head on them.
 
Looks pretty nice to me. I still like my '98 explorer. Maybe someday I will actually get a new one...
