want to talk fuel economy too? your sacastic comparison is as useless as anyone else. base everything on $ and performance.

If everyone buy cars base on $ and performance, you think the Japs would stand a chance?

Camry: EPA mpg, 20 city/29 hwy (3.3L, 225HP)
Impala: EPA mpg, 17 city/27 hwy (5.3L, 303HP)

Close enough given the 78HP difference. Sure, you can get one that does 24/33MPG, but then you get the 157HP 2.4L I4

and reliablity, warranty, crash rating?

you think having HP sells more or reliablity sells more?

and Camry v6 is not even in the same price range as SS impala $7000-8000 differences

pretty damn sure that 5.3L small block has had more vehicles its been placed in than your 3.3L could dream of having.

warranty? uh.... 32k/32k even comparison

crash rating, unknown status.

and that MPG is actually a GM estimate not yet EPA rated.

This has displacement on demand. 4 cylinders can cut off. To prevent wear and tear on the other four, does anybody know if this engine, or dodge's HEMI with similar technology, can switch back and forth between which four cylinders go, or would you eventually have four worn cylinders, and four less worn, down the line?

In GMs case, it always shuts off the same cylinders (as far as I know). I haven't read anything on the Dodge tech, I'd imagine its the same.

In all fairness, there is no extra pressure applied to the 4 cylinders that remain activated until the driver requires more power and then the other 4 are activated. The throttle control automatically opens up more even though you don't know it until the 4 deactivated cylinders are being used for combustion again.
Right, but there's definitely less wear exerted on the shut-off cylinders. If you could spread it to different cylinders you could really tweak engine life, I'd think.

I'm talking out of my ass now but I don't see why they couldn't change the active cylinders as you say. Maybe they do.
What I do now is that the Caddy NorthStar V8 has an emergency mode that allows you to drive up to 50 miles without coolant in the engine. This is done by turning off cylinders and alternating the active cylinders to spread the heat. Pretty cool.
