2006 ATOT Bass fishing/etc fishing thread

So this year im using strictly baitcasting stuff so far.
been out 4 times in the boat to no avail.
I did learn how to tie the dropshot rig, and have been experimenting with that.: difficult with the baitcaster as I need a 1/4 to 1/2oz weight to get it out there, I know its a more vertically fished rig, but i rarely see depths over 10ft at the ponds i fish.
Whats your story?


Ice out occured here 3 weeks ago or so, the water temps are hovering in the mid 50's.
I think part of my problem was that i went with the sledgehammer approach while these fish have lockjaw, tho i was hoping for a chance at a good pike early on, I dont icefish tho:/

I fish saltwater and use 0.5-6 oz lures. Typical rigs I use are single dropper loop, hi/lo, sliding sinker/carolina rig, 3-way rig. If you use a 3-way rig in a rocky area, use lighter line for the sinker so that if it were to get stuck in the rocks then you can salvage the rest of your rig.
Most of my reels are baitcasting. I love bottom fishing off the reefs here off the NorCal coast.

 
I've been fishing on Lake Erie for about 20 years now. Spring is a great time for the Smallmouth Bass. We take the boat and head up to the north side of Kelleys Island.

I really do enjoy fishing for bass. They hit the bait like a freight train and fight all the way in.

Bass being my sport fish of choice, although i'll take whatever i can get.
I love the baitcaster, but I think im going to lighten up a bit on more open water...try more of finesse approach especially with the drop shot on a light spinning outfit.

 
Oh yeah, I love fishing for bat rays. I usually use a whole baby squid wrapped around a hook using magic thread. I typically cast it way out using 5 or 6oz pyramid sinkers. When a bat ray hits, you just have to hold on for dear life and hope that your drag is set adequately. To me I've found nothing fights better.
I've caught a 150lb bat ray in the SF bay and it took me about 1.5 hours to get it in.

I love fishing too. The thing is that I used to fish freshwater and when I tried my hand at saltwater, I never went back. There are a lot more variety in saltwater and you just don't know whats at the end of your line until you get it up.
I know in freshwater you need to use as light line as possible and use flourocarbon so that its invisible. Freshwater fish seem to spook more easily.
 
I'm big into fishing. I usually fish for largemouth bass with a variety of lures but my main weapon of choice is a soft plastic worm. This type of fishing I usually do by myself or something into fishing because sometimes I don't catch anything. If I'm with friends, who usually just want to catch fish, I'll buy some nightcrawlers and fish for sunfish or catfish.

I went saltwater fishing for the first time this weekend at my prom house. I tried using sandeel lures in the surf but that didn't produce. Finally, I bought some frozen shrimp and I caught a lot of silver fish with a "carp"-like mouth and black dot on their back fin.

Dad has been on fire. The guy holding the fish is my girlfriends dad. We got a 37" the following day. Week before, my dad had a 33" but released it b/c it was catch and release season.

This is at Matapeake Pier, in Queen Anne's County of Maryland. Right on the Chesapeake Bay.
 
I can't wait for the semester to let out. I'll be fishing the Louisiana Star all summer.

I'll also take Bass fishing trips up to Toledo Bend.

Gas is gonna be expensive for me this summer 🙁
 
You can nail bass on a lot of different stuff around here (Great Lakes) but in my experience, the best thing to use is a small snag-free plastic frog that floats on the top of the water. Cast it out into a weedy area, preferably on the shoreline. Do some little jig motions - the more you can make the frog look like it's alive, the better. You will get nice hits in the early morning, or at dusk.

I've also had nice success with "Hula boppers" - not 100% sure what you ppl would refer to them as. It's a floating lure that makes quite a bit of motion & commotion when you let it do its thing.

On a calm morning or at dusk, basically anything that will cause a lot of action will get you hits. Then again, I've caught some nice smallmouth while trolling for walleye, so go figure! 😛

Switched to flouro midway through last year and havent looked back, right now im running 12lb yozuri on the baitcaster, great stuff.

im probably going to drop to an 8lb or even 6lb flouro for open water on my new spinning setup, mono just seems like junk after fishing this flouro, stretches less and maybe it just my imagination but i seem to feel the lure better on the flouro
 
We use those pencil poppers for striper fishing in ocean waters here near San Francisco. They are currently migrating out of the Sac Delta region into the bay and are making their way out thru the Golden Gate into the ocean. Baker Beach in SF is a great place to catch em if you don't mind the nudies around.

got a couple bass and alot of pickerel these past two weeks.
the fish seem to be liking the swimbaits(im using storm jigs) better than anything else im tossing.
i flipped a couple nice ones.
only a matter of time now before they get in my boat 🙂🙂🙂
 
Bigmouth Bass fishing, here in the Everglades, also Peackcock Basss, Oscar and Cyklets (or something like that), using Ugly Stick (6.6 long) spinning reel ( I can't use baitcasting, I never learned how to ) and crankbait, preferible Risto Rap #4 or # 5, or the new Rapala DT #6 or #10. I go with my best friend that has a 17' aluminum boat, and we compite to see who catch the most, using different lures 🙂

ncircle, this time of year (Mid spring), before the water gets into the 60's, I still fish a slow presentation for largemouths, such as a 1/4 oz jig and pig, a very slow retrieved crank bait, etc. Still have to fish a little deeper here this time of year. (Indiana).
Can't wait for the spawn/warmer water when I can fish a little faster.

I tournament bass fished in some of the small midwest tourneys in the late 80's early 90's and now just fish for recreation, and still have a ball!!
