2004: Year of the Paper Launch

This has certainly been a banner year for not being able to buy it. The X800XT PE and 6800U took months to make it to market after their announcement, Intel's P4 4.0 Ghz got canned, and the Nforce 4 boards we were supposed to see "by mid-December" are just now barely starting to trickle out, along with PCIe flavored high range GPUs, and midrange cards from ATi.

Is it just me, or has this year been a bumper crop for Launch But Don't Sell in the hardware world?

You're forgetting MS stopping future Windows 98 patches then backing out of the "paper launch." That was a good launch too 🙂

yes !

three thumbs down to ATI and Nvidia....too bad we dont have another choice and have to stick with either one of those evils....no matter how overpriced and (sometimes) faulty their products are.

The X800XT 'launch' btw, was one of the funniest thing ever...of course we all know these cards are/were hardly available...and *if* then for ridiculous amounts. I think some people are stil thinking these cards will be out soon (X800XT)....but ATI already took 'em of their web-page...means that these cards are not manufactured anymore.

They are all replaced by the X800XL, X850XT etc. series as most of us probably know.

And...well...dont even get me started with the Geforce 6800 GT/Ultra PCI-EXPRESS "availibility" 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
