Dude you're wasting everyone's time arguing about nothing. The maximum cargo capacity for the Highlander is 81 cubic feet as oposed to the POS Explorer's 82 cubic feet.

and your post is any better

Actually it is.

Car Buyer: "hmm, new 3rd row seat for the 2004 highlander is nice, but it probably has less cargo space then before..."
Toyota: "Hey dude, this car's got the 3rd row and the same amount of space when you fold it down!"
Car Buyer: "Really? Sweet! I didn't think putting the 3rd row in was such a good idea, but since the Highlander has the same cargo space as before, that's great. Plus, it'll come in handy if I have to haul more people than my standard American family of four! Sold!"
Toyota: *cha ching*
ElFenix: "blah blah i'm an expert this idea is stuid blah blah blah explorer has better sales blah blah i don't know what I'm talking about"
Toyota: "What ElFenix? Can't hear you, this cash register is going crazy! *cha ching* *cha ching*
Ford: "I'm going to keep laying off workers because apparantly ridiculous incentives to move more vehicles isn't profitable"

ROTFLMFAO! :p

Hehe postcount #1 battles it out with postcount #2 who will win?

I don't really percieve it as lost space since it folds into the cavity.

What does the Honda Pilot offer that the Highlander doesnt'?

The Pilot is an overall larger vehicle and is SLIGHTLY more powerful.

the biggest problem with the highlander is the strut towers rise into the cargo area, and you lose room there. that's why i went with my 4Runner.

Which handles better, is more refined, better build quality, most QUIET cabin and drives car like?

Those wheels look fuggin' chunky and ugly. Onboard GPS is cool though. Guess we'll have to wait til '06 to see what the fully redesigned model will look like, but the current model has been a HUGE hit for Toyota. Best selling mid-size crossover or whatever you wanna call it.

Ack! Those wheels are right off the ES300 coach edition......

Yeah, the strut towers do get in the way, but the Highlander is STILL a larger vehicle inside. It has more rear legroom and more total cargo capacity.

Rear Legroom; Highlander/4-Runner (36.4 / 34.7)
Max cargo space; Highlander/4-Runner (81.0 / 75.0)
Cargo space with 2nd row seats up; Highlander/4-Runner (38.5 / 42.2)

Well, I've driven both, and the Highlander definitely trounced the Pilot on handling/ride quality/cabin noise. Build quality is about equal, but I like the materials used in the Highlander better. While everything was tight and in place in the Pilot, there was a lot of hard plastic around the dash.

Thanks for the info!

I almost bought a Toyota Highlander a few months ago. It was a loss leader advertised for $24,995 and I thought wow that's a great price. I think it was a stripped barebones 4 banger. I'd like something mid-level with no leather which would prob cost around $29k?

i was pointing out that the explorer has better sales because it IS a direct competitor and NFS4 called the highlander "best selling"

Toyota could have waited, since it is the segment leader, beating the Honda Pilot, Nissan Murano, Buick Rendez-vous, Chrysler Pacifica and the Mitsubishi Outlander and Endeavor in sales in what it defines as the car-based midsize SUV segment. Highlander sales year-to-date are about 70,000, on the way to well more than 100,000 this year. The 12-month goal for the new model is 120,000.
Get out my face biatch! :p

But I never proclaimed it to be the leader of the "entire pack." I said exactly what Autoweek said :D

Yep, has always been available with the 4-banger. It's pretty fuel efficient and has sufficient power. If you get a FWD Highlander, the 4-banger is pretty darned good bargain.

Is it unfair to say that the Ford Ranger is the best selling compact truck in America when the F-Series is the best selling "truck" period?;)

no, because they don't compete head to head. the explorer and the highlander do. people don't cross shop rangers and F 150s... they do cross shop explorers, highlanders, trailblazers, grand cherokees, and pilots. its part of the reason the explorer was given IRS.

Actually, the reason why the Explorer and Expedition/Navigator got IRS's is b/c Ford wanted them to have folding flat third-row seats. That would have been impossible in those designs without dramatically raising the load floor.

i'm sure the much more car like handling didn't enter into their minds at all.

It was just a side-effect of the 3rd row seat ;) In fact (at least on the Expedition), most reviewers have said that the Navigator/Expedition are actually inferior to the live-axled Tahoe/Escalade in handling/ride quality.
