No, I'm not going to say it is because both candidates are milquetoast, or that I think both are terrible candidates. I say that was all lose -- simply because this has been such a negative campaign from the start. I cannot even stand to watch the news anymore, and I certainly cannot even read this forum. Both sides attack each other with such fierce vitriol that you'd think Americans hate each other. Is it more important that our candidate win, or that we as Americans begin to like each other again?

This election has made *me* as a person more negative, which I thought would be hard to do. I seriously get ill now whenever anyone tries to discuss this election. Everyone has their reasons for voting one way or another, but there is no longer any respect for your personal decision. Voting for Bush? Why you want to kill Iraqi civilians and you are an idiot! Voting for Kerry? Well, you are a dirty communist liberal who wants babies to be aborted. Voting for a third party? You are such an idiot that your right to vote should be stripped from you. Can't we STOP and see what this is doing? I'm very glad this election will be over soon, but it has really made me see that such negative campaigns are not good for this country. Gore vs. Bush was bad enough with the election scandal, but all the stops have been pulled out in this one. Every bag of dirty tricks have been opened. They've pandered to our emotions, our pocketbooks, our morals, our beliefs, and even to the dislike we have of the other candidate. Is this all that necessary? Why can't there be a positive message out there? A message of hope -- a message that this is America, and that we are all in this together? Nope. This has to be one of the most angry and divisive campaigns in history, and that is due to both sides.

This extremely negative election is setting a precedent for all elections to come. A Candidate's family, friends, and employer will be attacked and skewered. It has embattled the whole country, to the point that the general populace hates their neighbor and even members of their own family! This isn't an election to remember -- this is an election to forget. I'm not a partisan individual, so maybe that's why I see such a problem. I know past campaigns and elections have been bitter and negative, but this one has really taken it to a new extreme. With the internet, satellites, and expanding media we have 24/7 coverage of the candidates, their family, and ANYTHING that happens with the campaigns. We also have a constant spotlight on the opposing forces and their supporters. Sickening is the only proper word I can think of. This shouldn't be how we should elect our leader.

Sad, but true.

I've been reading Colleen McCullough's books on the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. The parallels to the current state of politics are fascinating...and not in a good way.

I agree its ugly, but its hardly new; national elections are usually bitterly-fought, especially when they're this close, and both sides think there's major stakes. It's just democracy, warts and all. I care a whole lot less about the tone of the campaign than I care about what's being promised by both sides - more federal 'goodies' for the voters while our national debt continues to climb. A nation can only spend into deficit for so long before the financial house of cards starts to come down . . .

Ah the fruits of Greed and Power, don't ya Love it?

Good Post Mill.

Unfortunately we are witnessing the demise of the U.S. from said Greed and Power, it truly is sad but History repeats itself because humans are too stupid to learn.

Greed and Power turns what is supposed to be the smartest brains on the planet to the stupidest.

To the History Books we go as Roman Empire II.

I can uderstand why Conservatives are against Kerry since he is a Liberal but it baffles me when they act as if the Dub has done a good job.

I don't think he has done a great job....but I do think he will do a better job than Kerry would. I just don't like Kerry. Eh......either way my first choice in 2000 was McCain and it still is....I'm just hoping he stays alive until 2008. I would love to see him put an ass kickin on either Kerry or Hillary.

I can understand where they think Bush would do a better job than Kerry and even why Bush's last 4 years haven't been the atrocity that some would have you believe, but yeah, I can't say Bush has been a *good* president. Certainly not the worst, but by no means the best. I guess it's a sliding scale. I would still rather have had him for the last four years than I would Gore.

There is a lot more at stake in this election then the consequences of negative campaigns. The benefits could outweigh the costs.

Amen. I've been very tempted to give Kerry my vote, but he's too close to socialist for me. I can't vote for him just to punish Bush for not doing a better job.
