Major problems, how about reliability. It's VW, duh!

Speaking from experience or here say? If from experience, then you're wrong. I've had four Vdubs. Two GTI's and two Jetta's. All MK2's. Two of the three went past 240k with no major problems. The other one had 139k when I sold her (Needed the money). Honestly, if you don't know what you're talking about, please keep your comments to yourself.

Now back to the topic. I would definitley get a different car, not because it's a VW, but because it's a GL. Yes, they are slow. Bottom lined cars. If the father is thinking more of the lines VW, I would, like others have said, go for a 1.8T if it's possible.

Apparently some people get lemons, others don't. If only VW would honestly work on build quality and reliability...

Honestly, it really depends on where it was made. German, Canadian, and American made VW's are great. It's seems from past experience that the Mexican made ones lack quality control. Once again, I mean no offense to our brothers down South.

But aren't all the Passats still made in Germany?

I would normally agree, but even Passats are not immune to having issues. But yeah..I think the Mexican made VWs are probably the worst. Again..VW being dumb...why not just pay more to have a factory in Canada/US, and as a result, have better QC.

I really don't know why GM gets a bad rap. We've had excellent luck with ours.

2000 Jetta
2001.5 Passat
2002 Passat

Electrical problems, engine problems, things all over the car would break and magically, not be covered under their bumper to bumper warranty. To be honest, its way to many problems to even list here (i did so in a thread awhile back and it was LONG). Needless to say, each of the cars was in the shop with something wrong every 10-15k miles, it was insane.

I will NEVER buy another VW. Fun to drive, but god, what a POS. Don't even get me started on the dealers, they were almost worse than the car itself.

No offense to hispanics, but $10 says they were built in Mexico. When the first of the MK3's came out my sister had purchased a Jetta that had the same issues you described. Even once, one of the seat brackets broke on her while she was driving, it too was made in Mexico.

You are correct on the Jetta, but both Passats were made in Dresden if i recall.

my vw has had its fair share of problems out of the ordinary "its an old car and things wear out" catagory but for some odd reason I still fix it instead of getting a different car. Its built strong thou, I got into a fender bender doing about 25 km/h and hit a civic, the civic was written off and my cars upper rad support was bent and I broke a head light. 50 bucks for a used headlight and 30 mins with a forklift bending it back into place and the car is a good as an old jetta.

I would get a Civic or a Corolla instead.(especially the S version)...looks great for a compact car.

I owned 2 Civic Si(2000 model) and in those 4 yrs, zero problems.
I mean nothing, just oil change and replace the battery.

Then I bought a 2nd car(don't know why) a 2000 Jetta.
Man all kind of problems already.
Had to replace the CV boot. Then the fuel pump and thing related.
Cost me $600+ where I don't think I spent that much on both Civic Si in 4 yrs.

Just from experience.

pics: bought it back in june

lol typical VW owner. "yeah the engine fell out, the doors are rusting off, a mouse popped out of the air conditioner and the transmission blew up, but it looks so sleek!"

Sadly, I would hate to be thrown in with that group. For some reason my 99 Passat honestly has not had any problems (despite my father and me using regular gas in it) in all of the 95k miles it has been driven; and it was a wrecked car that he fixed.

What really pisses me off is that instead of working hard on QC, VW decided they should try to build the Phaeton. What a waste of research, time, money.

The Phaeton actually was not a waste of time and money for VW as a company, it was a waste of time and money for VW of America to try and market it in the US. In all other markets the Phaeton sells suprisingly well.

Really? Have some stats/numbers that back that up (not that I am doubting you)?

I still think that they would be helping their image overall, at least in the US, by concentrating on reliability/build quality over all else.

Really? Where? I saw one for the first time on the road two days ago, and they've been out for a couple of years.

To put this into perspective, I saw an F50 on the road three days ago.

Fuel map, yes; but TMK everything else is a learned response to the driver's habits.
