I had the pleasure of driving a VW Polo TDI a year ago- okay, so it's not a Golf, but it's a fairly reasonable indicator of how the Golf should perform if it has the same engine, minus a few BHP for the weight difference.
That little car was the fastest diesel I've ever driven- 2.0litre HDI (common-rail diesel) turbo unit, and it flew. There's an annoying lack of throttle response but you get used to that. Basically, I'd drop it into second, to just over 1k rpm, and nail it. For half a second or so, absolutely nothing happened, then the engine computer would wake up and realise that you actually want to go somewhere. There's a short wait while the turbo spools up, and then, like I said, the thing just takes off. Before I knew it, the speedo's nudging 50mph, and the front wheels were scrabbling for grip on the road.
The power seems to drop off at about 4,000 rpm, which is about average for a turbo diesel, but the amount of power available to you is quite frightening for such a small car. I would have had a go at seeing someone off at the traffic lights, but it was my boss' company car and she would have throttled me if it didn't come back in the same condition.

But anyway, nice car. Although it doesn't really have much to do with the Golf, I thought I'd just share.
Oh, and the suspension was way too stiff for town driving.

Dude, I'm a VW enthusiast and own a 2002 Jetta myself. And as much as I love the Golf, you should look into something else if it only goes 41mph.

im with you on the vw diesel dude. im looking for an 84 rabbit so i can swap the new diesel(the 40mpg+ one) in. 1000 pound car with 170 pounds of torque at 2000 rpms while getting more then 40 miles to the gallon = winner(every pizza man should have one)

not to mention the after market.( i think mid 90s vws are prolly the poorist built, and not the prettiest either)

ps. anybody read about the screw driver trick? that A4 diesels can just have a screw tighted to push the psi up 3 or 4. i think i read that on the tdi club forums.

they make a 2.0? i thought it was 1.9? the big issue about swapping the new diesel into the old rabbit(it should fit, 4 cylinders, one turbo, A3 swapped to A4, shouldnt be that hard) is making it legal, suposedly putting it all in and it actually being legal is suppose to be not worth the money but.. im trying not to let that stop me, even tho i live in california which has the toughist smog laws in the world.

Indeed they do. The 2.0 is the one they use in the passat, and IIRC, some Mercedes use it too. The 1.9 is the lower power version used in the Golf and Jetta.

I'd say definitly go for the TDI! You'll be so much happier with that than with a Honduh.

And don't be disrespecting the Elantra. My roommate last year drove one and it is one nice ride for an economy car. I was very surprised, especially with the comfort and leg room.

The fact that you even considered the Element means you have no taste in cars, although the diesel Golf is a good decision.

i guess a school bus would be faster than you...

but yes it is quite economical. and remember the engine is not the only thing in the car. the tranny and the interior are also quite vulnerable to breakage... are you sure VW's have a great track record in their tranny's? does the interior fall apart within 2 months...?

lower class VW's (the bug, golf and some jetta's) are built in mexico IIRC...

hell i think a scion xB or even a base matrix would be a very nice car for cheap. i think both would around the same price if not cheaper than the golf...

the new elentra is another nice car.

What is this Scion xB people keep recommending? I've never heard of that company before. Just looked it up and it looks like a cool car, and it's inexpensive. :)

get the tC.

Fully loaded for like $16k. 17 inch rims, mp3 cd player, dual moonroof, abs.............. of yeah, is has a camry engine. 2.4 L 160 HP and 163 T

You know what's amusing? That "low power" diesel engine in the Golf has 14 more lb/ft of torque than the TC.
