What?

It's true, and you know it. :p

I have to admit, I haven't heard of any problems with the TDI's, though. And don't get me wrong, it is indeed an awesome car. We need more diesel cars here in the states.

I was just repeating what has been beaten to death already. Volkswagen is having some issues right now. It's not like it's a secret, and it's not like I said "NOO!!!!!! DON'T BUY VW!" I just said to beware, which means be an informed consumer.

:)

No, it isn't and I don't know it, because I have had first hadn experience. Our VW has had ZERO problems and we have put 75k on it.

Eli, the TDis are pretty nice. Usually diesel engines are overbuilt, well they need to be what with their insane 25:1 compression ratio :p you them strong metals y0!

I think the MAFs issue was resolved too...not sure though.

Yeah, not necessarily a VW, but my next car will be a diesel (3-4 years).

Check out one of the Mercedes Diesels. Drove one in Germany this spring, it was nice.

I just got rid of ours and I smile everyday knowing I don't own a VW. I used to own a couple 1980's VD diesels and liked them alot but this last VW burned me bad.

What year was it, and how did it burn you?

It was a 96. Everything was crap about it. Both front seats broke, the door trim even fell off it, the door locks break (this happens so often the VW guy knew the parts #'s by heart) The engine was leaking antifreeze out of the head fitting, it had valvetrain noise (only had 46K miles). Both O2 sensors went bad, Sparkplugs backed out of the head (??!!) and shorted out the ignition system to the tune of $600. It blew tail lights so often that we always kept some in the glovebox. It was just a plain all around crappy car. Its always possible to get a lemon but alot of the problems are common among other owners.
The cars in the year range are even known to have the window regulators melt and have the glass fall into the door. Some people I know have had them replaced like twice. The old diesels were very durable, I know, I've rebuilt and run several of them. I just wouldn't trust anything with VW written on it anymore.

That sucks, but was it a Jetta or Golf or what?

Then you are blind. :p

d00d, don't take it personally. I wasn't bashing Volkswagen, I love Volkswagen. I want to own a diesel automobile in the future, and Volkswagen is probably the only one that is going to deliver, so I can safely say that I will own a VW in the future.

All I was saying is that if he is considering the purchase of a Volkswagen, he needs to be informed. He needs to do some research and make sure there are no significant and common problems with it! That's all I was saying. There was nothing to read into or anything in my post.

You can't say that they have not had quality control issues in recent times, though.. that is a lie. IF they hadn't, I'd be the first to recommend them just as I do Honda or Toyota- without a second thought. But the quality control issues have put that big questionmark in my head. That question mark means "Research & know what you are buying into".

It wasn't meant to be a dis on Volkswagen at all. I appologize for the confusion.

It's great that you haven't had any problems with your VW. Unfortunately, the people that do have problems are louder. :(

TDI.....sweet, I recomended one to another ATOTer a few days ago. I think as far as diesels go here in the US, the TDI is prolly the best all-around performer for the price.

My wife had a Golf she bought new and it barely made it to 100k miles. That car was a total chunk of crap. Friend of mine had a Jetta he bought new and he had 3 transmissions in it by 70k miles. My sister in law had a Jetta and had nothing but trouble with it. Complete money pit after 100k miles. I'll never own a VW. Or an Audi for that matter.

As much as I hate the Element you probably should have bought it.

There you go. The #1 reason I keep starting threads about cars. :) In my research, the people that do have problems with VW have a LOT of problems. In my observation, most people on this board would recommend Honda.

Okay so the last review site I found about 2004 Golf, listed some competition in the same class, which was Honda Civic and Ford Focus. Is it worth my/your time to start a thread about the Focus? I'm not a fan of Ford, especially Escort and Taurus, but I've heard good things about the Focus and think they look nice. How long would they last though... :p

The only Ford I would buy, and I own one now, is either a truck or a mustang and thats only because they have been making them since dinosaurs walked the earth and have the bugs probably worked out of them.

im not absolutely sure... but don't these things pull out like 93 horses?

i guess a school bus would be faster than you...

but yes it is quite economical. and remember the engine is not the only thing in the car. the tranny and the interior are also quite vulnerable to breakage... are you sure VW's have a great track record in their tranny's? does the interior fall apart within 2 months...?

lower class VW's (the bug, golf and some jetta's) are built in mexico IIRC...

hell i think a scion xB or even a base matrix would be a very nice car for cheap. i think both would around the same price if not cheaper than the golf...

the new elentra is another nice car.

What is this Scion xB people keep recommending? I've never heard of that company before. Just looked it up and it looks like a cool car, and it's inexpensive. :)

:D

Scion is a Toyota brand. Like Lexus. Only instead of focusing on the luxury market, they're focusing on the.. best bang for your buck, market.

Oh, and I must respond to the horse sh!t you quoted.

Horsepower is an arbitrary number derrived from torque. It means very little. Torque is what moves you, and as you probably don't know, diesels produce insane ammounts of torque realitive to horsepower because of their low redline.

Horsepower = Torque * RPM / 5252

yes check out the scion's... if you don't get turned away by their looks

i personally think they are fine...

however like i said you can pretty scoop up a new elentra for $10k or so. they never sell by the MSRP... drive it for a couple of years and you can still sell it to some poor college kid for $5000 or something...

exactly they won't hold their values. that is why the new ones are so cheap and the used one are even cheaper. perfect for everyday driving and i heard the driver's seat is the best among the economical class...

Make sure all the lights work properly before you buy one. I see so many VW's with messed up lights. Someone driving down the freway with reverse lights on, etc.
Just have your wife stay outside and make sure everything works :D

It is a diesel... 100 horses of 177ft/lbs of torque, more than a standard camry engine (for reference).

That is true though, that the lower class ones are built in Mexico. TMK though, the trannies are fine and the engine is good, it is just other things (with the ones built in Mexico).

If you wan't diesel, you don't have many options. You could get a Passat diesel, but doesnt seem like you want a sedan really.

I just read a good review about the Scion:

Scion

The article specifically mentions the Civic, Element, and Golf.

the VW TDI is a one fantastic motor.... I have mine in a Seat Cordoba (basically a Made in Spain VW) and it regularly turns in over 45 mpg...
