Okay so earlier today we're on the way to the Honda dealership so I can show my wife the green 2004 Honda Element I was looking at, and seriously considering leasing (and then financing to own when the lease is up) - as opposed to buying the 98 VW Jetta Wolfsburg for $10k I was also looking at.

After talking to her about how the lease worked, and the fact Hondas hold their value so well, that in the end I'm better off leasing the Element than financing the 98 VW, blah blah...

And she says... "Well if you're going to spend that much on a new Honda, then why don't you spend that much on a new Volkswagen which you wanted?"

:light: <---- wife
 <---- me

Okay so here's the deal. My ultimate dream car is a new Golf TDI (diesel). Get's 41mph, and should last me over 250,000 miles. It's a 4 door so good as a family car, but still a hatchback which is good for lugging around hardware.

This thread spawned from my other 2 threads:

2004 Honda Element

Toyota Echo, 98 VW Bug, Chevrolet Aveo

Yea I'm indecisive. I need a car now, but it's about time I get a decent one (current car is economy, no AC, only the AM works, power nothing) but the most I've spent on a car was last year, $7k for my wife's 97 Honda Civic. I test drove a 98 VW Bug and a 98 Jetta Wolfsburg, and I didn't get a good impression of either - engine seemed to vibrate too much and the car wasn't as comfortable to sit in as I thought it would be. So I'm wondering if the 2004 Golf TDI is an improvement??? Sorry about all the threads but most people only visit them the first time and I keep changing the subject. :p

Golf TDI 02' owner here, haven't regretted it for a moment, worst MPG with oversize rims tires & an auto is ~38.

<---Waits to be beaten about the head & neck by VW haters:(

hey I like the TDi. I heard its fairly reliable..and only faulty thing is the MAF..which should be fixed by now.

I think the TDI models are a very smart choice, especially the new 04 TDI models with hte new engine.

That is awesome dude, TDIs are SWEET. Id love one myself. Hopefully by the time I am out of college and my '99 Passat is driven to death, TDIs may be more popular. THe 2004 Golf should be a major improvement.

Edit: And they slightly improved the TDI engine in the 2004 model.

My first car was a 1985 Gulf, also an economy version - I had it until 253,000 miles, only reason I had to get rid of it was because the CV joints and alignment kept going bad, clutch was about needing replaced, but the engine was still going strong.

Yeah, the TDI should last just as long if not longer, Diesels are solid.

My cousin owns one. I drove it for a month without refilling dude :Q Crazy :Q I really like the looks of it as well. Dunno about the mass air flow sensor issue but it may have been fixed if it was pre-2004.

The fact that you looked at an Element is pretty scary.

Anyhow a few years ago my woman bought a Jetta TDI and has been more than happy with it.

The VW isn't going to get any love around here, and rightfully so.

VW needs to pull themselves out of the crapper. I'd beware.

Well I don't think Honda hasn anything that compares to the Golf, so there isn't much of a war to have.

I just got rid of ours and I smile everyday knowing I don't own a VW. I used to own a couple 1980's VD diesels and liked them alot but this last VW burned me bad.

EDIT oh yea. we got a honda in its place. :)

Are you talking about a regular VW or a TDI VW? I agree, most VWs make the baby jesus cry when it comes to reliability but TDIs are

Eli, the TDis are pretty nice. Usually diesel engines are overbuilt, well they need to be what with their insane 25:1 compression ratio :p you them strong metals y0!

I think the MAFs issue was resolved too...not sure though.

What was it you had? Our Passat is running beautifully.

Yeah, not necessarily a VW, but my next car will be a diesel (3-4 years).

What?

It's true, and you know it. :p

I have to admit, I haven't heard of any problems with the TDI's, though. And don't get me wrong, it is indeed an awesome car. We need more diesel cars here in the states.

I was just repeating what has been beaten to death already. Volkswagen is having some issues right now. It's not like it's a secret, and it's not like I said "NOO!!!!!! DON'T BUY VW!" I just said to beware, which means be an informed consumer.

:)
