2003: User created with 'Remote Desktop User' can't log in remotely

I'm running WIN/2003 and have a user (admin under a different name) that can get to the box remotely.

I tried creating another user putting him in the 'remote admin' group, but get an error when trying to log onto the box remotely with this user being:

To log on to this remote computer, you must have Terminal Server User Access permissions on this computer. By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users Group have these permissions. If you are not a member of the Remote Desktop Users group or another group that has these permissions, or if the Remote Desktop User group does not have these permissions, you must be granted these permissions manually.

I did try to put this user in the 'Administrators' group and reboot the box, but that didn't help either.

Any ideas?

Have you tried to add him to the Remote Desktop Users Group ? Compmgmt.msc --> Local users and Groups --> Groups -- Remote Desktop Users ?

Have you checked the TS Configuration tools whether the user has User access to a Session ?

If the user is a members of the Admin group it shouldnt matter if they are in the remote desktop group (unless the privilages have been modified).

Originally, I logged into the win/2003 remote console and created the user as well as set the password (remotely).

When that didn't work, I created the user locally on the box using an admin ID and giving admin priveledges to the newly created user.

Under Computer Management --> Local Users and Groups --> Users

This is a standalone box, vanilla install with SP1 applied.

A few things I noticed....
1.) I think my 120 days is up, however, I was told that if only 1 person connecting at a time (in addition to console), that I would not have to renew.

Under computer --> properties --> remote, the bottom section is greyed out.

Any ideas?

Are you running Active Directory, or some form of domain?

If so, then Local Uses & Groups will not work, you'd need to use Active Directory - Users & Computers.

No active directory or domain controller... just a stand-alone version of WIN/2003 w/ SP1 applied.

I believe the issue is that my 120-day trial has ended... however, I was PM'd in regards to this issue and was told that if the console is logged into, that I should be able to have a single user to remote in without renewing the license.

I do not need 15 or so people logging on, just me to access my box from a remote location.

Well, a friend advised me to remove the 'terminal server' from add/remove programs (windows components) and now I can have 2 users logged on simultaneously remotely and one via console.

THought I'd share that with you guys in case the issue comes up again.
