2003 Grand Caravan clicking noise while driving

Hi All:

My wife's DGC has an odd clicking noise between 0-20 mph while accelerating and 20-0 when decelerating with brake applied. The noise is similar to the clicking of money-wheels at fund-raiser picnics, or a playing-card in bicycle spokes (but much slower)

I took it to a local garage and transmission shop and neither could determine what it is. I'm beginning to wonder if its CV/axle related, steering/suspension related or maybe a motor mount. The van has about 65K on it.

Any ideas ?

Almost forgot (A bit redundant but following the sticky):
- 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport w/ Touring suspension
- Engine: 3.8
- Mileage: 64,800

First jack the vehicle up and put it on jack stands. Do you know if it is the fronts or the rears ? Rotate the suspect wheel and listen for the problem. If need be, since it will be on 4 jack stands, you can run the motor in gear to try and hear the noise (carefully). From what you are describing, it sound like something is hitting, like the brake pad wear sensors or maybe the cv joints.

The first shop thought it was brake related too. They changed the rear pads and rotors, but the noise didn't go away. So they only charged me for parts not labor. I was warned about the brakes during last inspection, so I didn't complain too much.

I forgot to mention that this all started when I found a small amount of fluid leaking under the van. I thought it was oil, but it was the trans fluid. The solenoid pack was rusted through and leaking, so I had it replaced. While at the trans shop (Cottman), they couldn't diagnose the clicking.

Thanks

Yes. I should have stated that we went to the first garage for the clicking noise and fluid leak. I apologize if that wasn't clear. Anyway, they saw it was a trans issue and sent me to Cottman.

The clicking noise started during a President's Day vacation. I did not hear it when we left home. It started after we exited the highway (after 180 mi drive), and began driving in the city. It's become more frequent since then.

Well, they've looked at the rear brakes, but what about the fronts? Could be a warped brake rotor.

Does it speed up as the vehicle speed increases? Conversely, does it slow down as the vehicle slows down?

Does it only do it while braking on slowdown? If you coast, does it make the noise? Coast up an incline without touching the brakes and see if it makes the noise. If it's only when the brake is applied, it's brakes, IMO. Warped rotor as I said, or a pad has separated from the backing plate.

A CV shaft should be independent of braking and would click loudest when turning.
