2003 Audi RS6

Has anyone here driven one or had any experience with them? A friend of mine needs quick cash and has to sell his and is willing to sell it for cheap. It has the APR chip on it with a stock, 93, 100, and valet tune on it. On 93 octane it is good for for ~520hp from the TT 4.2l V8. He only has 36k miles on it.

Thoughts?

They're really good at hauling marijuana... well, until the cops catch up to you. Get the wagon, though. 😛

On a serious note, I've never researched them because I don't have a reason to (or the cash to) own one. Sounds like a really fun car, but think VERY hard about what you want the car for. If this is going to be a weekend / track / etc. car and you have the cash to blow on parts, maintenance, insurance, etc., go for it. If you're just looking to grab it because it's once-in-a-lifetime cheap and can't really afford much more, just remember that a brake job on a high performance car costs a lot more than a brake job on a Civic... and God forbid if you run into drivetrain problems out of warranty.

$24k. There's a second buyer but he is giving me first shot at it since he owes me one.

Not really scraping the money together to buy it, it'll be more practical then my current car though it'll probably have higher maintenance costs, I'll do much of the work myself.

Hell yes, even if you put another couple of 1000's miles on it and sell it you wont be in much of a loss

Be wary of the tune. Has it just been installed or has he been running it like that for some time? If it seems OK to you, and getting a mechanic to give it the once over would be a good idea friend or no friend, then I say bite his hands off. RS6's are pretty sweet cars!

HELLLS NO

Unless the car has full on extended warranty, I would touch it with a 10ft pole attache to my 10 ft pole. Parts for that car are VERY hard to get and super expensive (brake rotors $500+), transmission and more frequently the torque converter goes out all the time, DRC doesn't work half the time (there's a recall for it, still a bitch) and turbos run ~6K if i remember correctly.

Off the top of my head: new trans $12K, $6K rebuilt, torque converter $2.5K, don't think there's an option to rebuild. Timing belt every $35K.

You're much better off getting an S6 with that mileage; there's really no sense buying a car with a maintenance cost of an italian exotic... that's not an italian exotic.

Also 99% of people here don't have the slightest clue about german cars, much less audis. The RS6 is an ENORMOUS money pit, far more than any other german car I've seen. It's most definitely not a first/only cars and a daily driver... see rs6.com for yourself.

The warranty/maintenance moaners have turned up on time.

NEWS JUST IN: Fast cars need fast cash. Any buyer of this type of metal will be well aware of this.

Go to Rs6.com, audiworld or quattroworld and check out the RS6 forum. I would peg the maintenance cost at 5-10x of an M5 and even if you DIY the parts cost is enormous.

My last 3 cars german and I exclusively DIY and I'm telling you this car needs extended warranty. You can't find a replacement trans on car-part.com

I run an M3, myself, and although it costs to maintain it's well worth it to me. It costs less to run than my WRX did, though...stupid 6 month serving interval. A friend of mine has the V10 version and it's one of the cars on my list for my next car.

Just because it's expensive doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it. Sometimes people want these cars and are willing to pay for repairs when they are required. That's MY point. I wasn't saying it would all be roses, but maybe it will, you don't really know any better than I do.

$24k? go get it! Just make sure to have a lot of money in your bank account - or a warranty

Monkey with a metric tool set can maintain an M3. Aside from the subframe shearing off, the car doesn't have any weak spots.

The Rs6, on the other hand, has high ticket weak spots. There's guys on rs6.com that are on their 4th and 5th torque converter and rebuilt transmissions. For the tbelt service, the whole front end needs to come off (just like other C5 a6 cars).

I can source the entire E46 m3 drive train from parts less than 200miles away from me and easily under 5K. I have yet to see the twinturbo v8 for sale.

Lots of reading last night and Halik is right, I might as well buy a Ferrari with the maintenance and upkeep costs.

Going to hold off for now.

I'll trade my 06 A4 for it!!

Pop over and powerflex mine then.

Well scratch the RS6 from my list then. Looked it up and yep, it's tranny apears to be made of glass. Shame.

Taking the front end off for a timing belt service isn't limited to the RS6. A B5 A4/passat needs to go into the service position for the timing belt. front bumper and a few other things come off. sweet

it's really not that hard to take a bumper off, generally. a large dismantling of the car may scare off the more casual DIYer, but if you've got decent experience with modern cars it's not that hard to take apart the front end.

i'd be more worried about procedures requiring engine or trans removal. which seems to be a common theme with these cars.

well, keep in mind just maintenance will be freaking expensive...around 500ish for oil, fuel filter, and plugs. god help you if you need any other work, labour will cost somewhere around 80-120$ an hour plus parts costs.

buy two, afford one.

That is f*cking cheap compared to Subaru (I own a 2005 WRX); £90/hour at a main dealer. And then they rape you over the cost of genuine parts.

I've just had my cambelt replaced: £300ish for the belt and tensioners and £150 for labour. Other things which need doing to my car: £900 (fitted) for replacing both rear shocks and £175 for a cracked front fog light lense. I'll get the light / lense off eBay (£50 new for complete fog light) if the hairline crack develops into something worse and replace both rear shocks with Konis or something similar.

A handful of bolts hold on the front bumper skin and the underlying support, all easily accessible. A handful more hold on the radiator support, which you can easily unbolt and swing out of the way without having to remove the radiator / A/C condensor (and the A/C lines can stay intact so you won't need to drain and refill the system). It sounds lousy, but it's a blessing in disguise when you have the entire motor staring you in the face. There are no tight quarters to work your arms through, no awkward angles to view from to get the timing marks right, nothing in your way at all. I just did a timing belt on our Subaru which has a similar AWD / Longitudinal layout, and you can't remove the radiator support to get better access. It was by no means tough (because Subaru makes lining up the timing marks a snap) but I did wonder how much easier it would have been if the whole support came out. It takes a little more work, but it makes it impossible to screw anything up.

The RS6 takes 9 quarts of oil, to the WRXs 4.8. I can guarantee that almost every part on thgat Audi will be more exensive than those for your Subaru.
