but you see that's not going to be your typical audience and you are assuming more home mechanics are going to spend their free time researching all these things instead of just fixing the problem to get back to driving rather than shopping for parts.

This is a tech forum, a few acronyms isn't going to scare me away. If anything using the proper terms does me a favor because it makes my research a lot easier. And again because this is a tech forum, yes I am likely to spend my free time researching all these things.

I may not fix it myself, but I do want to understand why it's happening & what's necessary to fix it. My lack of appropriate tools, workspace, and (perhaps most importantly) the total lack of desire to crawl around under my car does not mean I lack basic comprehension skills and the desire to learn.

I made an effort to reproduce it this morning after arriving a little early to work. I couldn't sit long enough to make it happen, but I did hear a strange ... Bubbling?... Noise from the back of the car while it was off. Sounded like something leaking or air being brought through a liquid via a vacuum. It kept going the entire 5-6 mins I sat there.

I don't spend a lot of time in my car when it's off so who knows. I haven't heard that noise in a car before though.

Same thing was happening to my a4 - turned out it was the coolant temp sensor. It thought the car was cold and was just dumping fuel into it.
