I was looking for a used car last Saturday and went to two dealerships. The ford dealership was offering a 2002 ford escort se- 4dr sedan, auto,a/c, am/fm/cs radio, pw,ps, 2 passenger airbags, 4 cylinder and 20k + miles on it for $8800. The toyota dealership was offering a 2000 toyota corolla CE -ac, am/fm/cs, pw, automatic transmission, 4dr, w/ 44k plus miles for $8200. The obvious choice is the ford since it is newer but quality wise- in my personal opinion, the toyota w/c is offering a 6 year 100k miles warranty to the ford's 3yrs/36k miles warranty s/d be the choice. Apparently, the book value for the ford is 10-11k and the toyota is $12500. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

you mean a focus? the price should come down with some negotiation... i'd get that, its less boring looking and a bit more comfortable inside (bigger)... might want to check the price on an aftermarket warranty and see exactly what the toyota's warranty covers, though.

There is no 4 door 2002 escort. Just a focus. A compromise between the two would be to look for a Chevy Prism - it's a rebadged corolla without the corolla resale (works in your favor).

I like the entry level Toyota much better than the entry level Ford.

Have it checked out before buying.

They could be carryovers from a fleet.

Chevy didnt make the Lumina anymore in 2000 for public sale, but they did for Avis.

You know- I get the feeling - rebadge corolla for the chevy prism? that is cool- and that is the first time I hear of it.

It's still an escort but they now call it the ZX2

See
here and here.

The ZX2 is the car formerly known as Escort Sport and it only comes in 2-door (hence the ZX-2, not to be confused with the Focus ZX-3 (3-door) and ZX-5 (5-door)).

the corolla cause it has vtec. :p

actually it does have toyota's own brand of variable valve timing. 2000 is the first year that the corollas got it.

The corolla's motor has some nice maintenance free features, distributor less ignition, iridium spark plugs. Dunno how that compares to the ford tho.

I drive a prizm/corolla and I haven't had any major problems yet at 40k miles. Some faint squeaks and rattles tho.

That longer warranty is nice.

The car has escort se on it. And, I think, the ZX2 was made in 2001 and replaced by the Focus ZX3. Not sure, though.

My '98 Corolla CE hasn't had any major problems (that I'm aware of)..I bought it from my grandparents with ~113k on it - now have ~117k. Still going great..I may need some brake work, though - the light comes in once in a while..have to get it checked out (or look at it myself :p)

I'm quite happy with it - not exactly a speed demon, but I get 28mpg city..and I'm not the world's slowest driver. I hit 40mpg highway once. :D

Brake pads are worn out. Quick fix for the light is to add more brake fluid.

I've driven 98' and 99' prisim/corolla's and the 00' and 01' focus' and the corolla's are much better car. I hated the focus. if it is an escort i dont know anything about it... the last escort i drove was a 97'. The focus i found were uncomfortable and a little sluggish. just my 2 cents....

Note: the warranty is retroactive to the year the car was made. So the corolla's warranty is good beginning 2000 to 2006. Same goes with the 2002 ford.

I would opt for the Toyota if those are your only choices, however the price seems steep. Buying used, you might be better off to look to a private party and avoid dealers as they will only rip you off. Whichever route you go, have the car inspected first. Also, keep in mind, that statistically that Corolla will be on the road long after the zx2 gives up, and will hold it's value higher all the while. The geo/chevy Prism is definately a viable option if you can find one, however it does not retain resale value as well as the Toyota will; but as cars are not investments, merely neccesities, then that should be a non issue. Good luck!

2002 was the last year for the 4 door Escort, and as PsychoAndy said, they were pretty much sold only to fleets (rental car companies, utility compaines, etc.)...resale value sucks, but they're pretty reliable (no major issues with my '99).
