Ok, so I have an oldsmobile intrigue GL, '01.
I've managed to lose one of the two keys to the car.
Now, I'm under the impression that I can't get another replacement made at any old locksmith because theres some special chip inside the key or something (according to the dealer). Something about how the key needs some chip inside the key to be present in order for the car to start.
Now I call BS on the dealer, since the key has no battery, and is very small and seems highly unlikely to contain anything -inside-.

So my question is, can I just get a key made, or do I really need to spend $50 at the GM dealer for them to make me a new key?

Go spend the $1 at Walmart and have a copy made. If it works, great. If it doesn't, you are out a buck. Big deal.

yes the key is coded.

if you want to waste a buck try what mimendo said.

but trust me it's coded, and it doesnt require a battery.

BTW, the copy will start the car but it will shutoff after a few seconds.

Do I need to "program" that key(on ebay) or anything? The dealer seems to be implying that the key needs to be programed or something.
Or can I buy that and just get it cut?

passkey 3, no chip, but you're not gonna like what happens when you put that $1 walmart key in and turn the ignition

So what will happen?

Would you care to elaborate?

there is no passkey system on the intrigue. it is the passlock system.

so that means i can use the $1 walmart copy?

yes. if you have the SECURITY light on the right side of the cluster and no "PK3" engraved on the key.

haha, while heading out to get the walmart key made, I found the key in the backseat... so I don't think it's worth the trouble to head out there just to see if it works.

They key to my '97 Regency has a small tab on it. Looks like a connector of some kind.

I didn't get the key made. What I meant was that before leaving to get a key made, I found the old one. Maybe some day when I happen to have an extra few minutes to kill and I'm in walmart I'll get one made just to see if it works.
