Sounds like a good deal.

Instead of waiting for shipping, I would hop a plane on a one-way ticket and then drive it back home myself. It's cheaper, you get to inspect yourself prior to delivery, it's faster, and it's a fun way to spend a weekend. :)
I sold a car to an out-of-state buyer last year, and that's what he did. Worked out great for me (as the seller) too.

Yahoo shows about a 20 hour drive time and 1300 miles. Call it 2 solid days with an overnight hotel stay somewhere in Eastern Iowa.

edit: btw, this car had an MSRP of $26-27k new. Just FYI.

How much did it go for when it was new and unstolen?

The highly generic kbb value on it, assuming it's the standard options, is $20225, and with kbb, it's safe to say you can give or take 1000. ;)

Hrm... I still don't like the 18K price, something like 15-16K seems fair to me, but maybe I'm a cheapass

I have been looking for one of these for a long time, and this price is pretty nice. Hopefully the car looks and drives just like how the mechanic says....It is kinda crazy buying it sight unseen and only relying on another persons opinion....

Check out autotrader.com and search for all of the 2001 preludes and check out the prices and mileage.

Sounds like a good deal to me. You are basically getting a brand new $27k car for $18k. Good deal!!!

If you do fly out and drive it home though I would definitely have the fluids changed before you make that drive (oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid and gasoline). Have the oil changed again as soon as you get it home and you should be fine. Probably cost you a couple hundred bucks but I think it would be money well spent.

I just talked to my buddy who lives three hours from Denver. I was going to see if he could stop by a get a quick peek just for that extra security of knowing that there really is a car there.....but he will be unavailable. Oh well, I guess I will just let the suspense build up until the day it gets here.....I kinda feel like I'm at a casino gambling....with about 18k on red and the wheel hasn't stopped spinning yet.

He tried talking me into coming out there to get it but I'm not sure how I feel about breaking that thing in from Denver to Ohio. Either way all of the fluids will get changed ASAP, and then probably do the oil again at about another 500 miles just for good measure.

If it is indeed what you tell us, then $18k is a fair price. If I was local and had it mechanically inspected, I'd drop $18 on it as well.

As a comparison, I paid $22500CDN for my 2001 Prelude SE with 47000KMs on it.

Make sure to post pics and your thoughts of the vehicle after you've picked it up :D

And, no, I wouldn't drive it home. It's not broken in yet. I'd spend the money and fly there to see it in person, that way you'd have no regrets or second thoughts about it. Spend the time and money and do it right.

If my buddy in Denver would be in town next week I would definitely fly out there, but he is gone for a week or two. I was mulling this over all last night and coulnd't make up my mind if I should just fly there or not.

What's wrong with driving it before it's broken in? How else are you going to break it in? :p

As long as he keeps the RPMs reasonable, it's fine.

It just seems like it would be safer to break it in with more "regular" driving, as oppsed to non-stop 1300 miles of highway? Maybe I'm thinking of it wrong?

Despite what some overly anal people say, it doesn't really matter as long as you drive in a reasonable manner. Right after I bought my 98 Integra GSR, I unexpectedly had to take a couple of business road trips and the car's first 1,000 miles were all highway in the 1st week I owned it. Didn't affect it a bit. I owned it for 5 years and 80k miles and it always ran great, never used oil, and I never had a problem with it.

FWIW, BMW recommends varying the RPMs during the break-in period on their cars. Wouldn't be that hard to do for highway driving though, just downshift to 4th every now and then.

Pics will be posted once the car arrives...should be in about two weeks, unless I fly out and drive it home. I did finalize the loan today. I did it through capital one auto online and got a 12k loan at 5.15%. It took about 8 mins and they approved me right away via email. I couldn't believe how easy it was.
