Has anybody here read the the book (or seen the movie if it does not differ re: the AE-35)? Did HAL purposely misdiagnose the condition of the AE-35 unit? If so, why?
I just finished reading the book, and this is bothering me.

he couldn't take that he had to lie... well not really lie but hold back information
so the only way he felt he could complete the mission was by killing off everyone and doing it himself...
