2000 Work Units!

Quite an accomplishment for me with Seti considering that in the first 3 years I managed less than 200...

Then I found my way here to the DC Forum and TeAm! My computer was in serious need of an upgrade, so with the help of the forums here at Anandtech, and some good advise from the gang here, I was able to upgrade my computer, and constructed a fairly good cruncher. I didn't have alot of funds to work with, so I shopped and compaired and asked alot of questions and eventually built a good overclocking machine (check the sig below). When that was complete, I set a goal of "1000 before the project ends" and succeded with that goal. I had offers from a few other crunchers to help me get to that goal, but I wanted to get there on my own and on February 20th, I made it to 1000 WU's.

Today, I completed my 2000th WU. I don't have access to more than just 3 computers to crunch with, so I'll never get the massive numbers some of you guys are getting. I have my main computer, and the old one, which does 1 WU every 20 hours or so, and a friends computer, which doesn't run nearly as often so I get maybe 3 or 4 WU's every other week. So, here I crunch, steadily along at about 7 per day average...

I think I'm going to step back a little. For awhile, I was consumed with this, and found myself not using the computer for some of the things I used to, for fear of losing the memory bandwidth for crunching. I'd like to hope that soon the funds will be there so that I can build another system to add to my "farm", but we'll just have to see. I'll still be crunching, and won't stop what I'm doing with the machines I have running, but I can't let this consume me like it did. I'll be here all the time checking stats, but probably won't race anymore.

In the mean time, I want to sincerly thank you all for your support and encouragement. Like I said, it wouldn't have happened without the contacts I have made here with TeAm and Anandtech. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

KEEP ON CRUNCHING!!!!

Way to go, Bob, 2k definitely makes you a star player in my book, but hey, 2 units makes you a star player too :)
As many have said before me, its the people that make this team special, not how much you crunch :)

Use your computer, to be honest 99% of the stuff you do doesn't have much of an effect on seti, and
I for one don't really mind if it takes 6 or 7 extra minutes a work unit since im using my computer for what it was bought for first, and for seti second :)

At any rate, 2k is a great milestone, and be proud of your accomplishment,, and contribution to the team.

Heheh..... Thanks JW.... I already checked that. Not concerned about that one since it is about 2 1/2 months away at my current rate of crunching. I'm gonna just cruise for awhile and see where it goes, if the program continues, etc... I made my goal of 1000... then made it to 2000... I'm happy.

:)

The "small" crunchers are as important as any of the guys (or gals) getting massive numbers.

Congrats on 2K!! :D

Great job Bob.
The numbers of work units completed isn't as important here as it is with some of the other teams and the smaller producing teammates are just as big a part of the TeAm as the ones crunching hundreds a day, indeed the smaller producers may have to work harder for their production then some of the larger producers

Awesome, Bob! I think I can safely say that I'm in the same boat as you. The people here on Anandtech have been some of the most friendly and helpful people I've met. That's what convinced me to join this TeAm. I started out with one computer and now have 3 crunching. This is really the team to join, imho.

Haha, I almost laughed when I saw your comment about being afraid to touch your computer. Not at you, mind you, just that I went through the same thing. I was afraid to touch my main cruncher lest it add time to crunching the WU. I eventually cured myself though ;)

I bet every one of us have had those times when we would do the same as Bob and weigh each use of our computers against how much it would hurt Seti production.

I have recently decided to start enjoying my computers more and I?d suggest we all do whatever pleases us the most. That would be different things for different people ? ?different strokes for different folks?. ;)

My good friend, RickD, loves to see how fast he can make his computers run. I visited him yesterday and looked at his awesome rig (Capt Rick #1). He had a string of Seti WUs that took between 1:37 and 1:38! SisSoft Sandra reports he is running at almost 3.6 GHz. Man was he proud ? as was I. :)

Usually I spend my leisure time in my home office where in addition to working with and on computers, I also watch a little TV. About a month ago I decided to go for a quiet, soothing atmosphere . I have turned down all of the fan speeds to their lowest settings and I lowered my FSBs so the computers are all running rock stable and QUIET.

For the pure beauty of it I have started up Webshots on all my rigs. They really do have some gorgeous pictures. Hell, I?m even listening to streaming radio. :D LOL

I guess what I?m trying to say is the same as the other guys, ?Take a break, smell the roses and use your computer for whatever you want. DC will be there long after we are all gone.? ;)

/me now ducks from Engineer?s blast that?s sure to come. LOL :)

Almost forgot, Congratulations to BobTheWizard on the great accomplishment and milestone. 2,:D:D:D Smileys coming at ya!

Congrats, Bob!

This is really strange timing for this thread! Just this afternoon I had a BSOD on my 8RDA+ system due to heat + OCing. I shut the system down and checked the heatsink (SLK-800a), sure enough, it was time for it's (now weekly!) cleaning.....

I thought to myself that this was our first "official" hot day, and was wondering if I should change my bios to lower settings for the summer. THEN I thought about what affect that would have on the WU's!!

Now, I've only been a team member for about 3 weeks, and I'm crankin' 2 systems 24/7. I find myself not doing many of the things I used to do, light gaming, rippin' music, etc...

I said "Wait a minute..who's system IS this anyways? Do whatever you want! Don't take this so seriously! It's supposed to be for FUN!"

So that's what I'm gonna do from now on! (Still gonna crunch 24/7, but it's ok to take a break once in a while!)

I have to say that I'm glad I joined such a good team! I enjoy the stats, and I'm always amazed at the dedication many of you have shown to the project.....

Congrats Bob on your Milestone!!!

And like all the others said, Its not the work-units its you we really care about!!! And yes this is supposed to be fun, even if we get a little obsessed! If we don't take those moments to reflect and game a little or do what ever brought us all into the computer world to begin with what fun is there in that?

Congrats Bob on hitting 2k:D ,very nice achievement in a short space of time!

Very glad that you joined our team:)

I've got 2 fairly fast rigs here ,the 2nd is off most of the time (you have no idea how tempting it is to leave it on crunching;)) ,I switch it on when I game on my main rig to keep output up;).
Inccidently the heat is a big incentive to leave it switched off atm!

I also had to down clock my main rig 10MHz as it would lock occasionally on a very hot day!.
