$2000 Rig

If you had 2 grand to spend on a computer...what would you do....

dont need a case

(lol just thought of the nickelodeon show)

What is the intended useage ? Without that, I have no idea what to recommend.

What about optical drives and PSU, and stuff?

At any rate, something along the lines of

Asus K8N-E Deluxe or MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Athlon 64 3400+ 2.4GHz 512K
Thermalright SLK-948U or Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu
2x 512MB PC3200 value
Radeon X800XT PE, or GeForce 6800GT if you can't find one
1x 74GB Raptor + big storage drive

Anything above that will net you 1-2% performance gains at best for exponential costs. Unless you want to go for a lower-end dual Opteron rig, or even Xeons as they're more cost effective at the lower end... (higher end dually Opteron with SCSI and all that is more in the range of $10K)

this would be a gaming rig mostly..and college school work..also might dabble in some music mixing but none of these things really take much of the power a gaming rig does

I wouldn't blow $2000 on a gaming rig, since $500-800 of that money will be mostly wasted.
Unless you count the monitor, in which case I'd buy the best 21-22" CRT I could find.

20" dell 2001fp lcd ~750
aeron chair with all the goodies ~700

whatever 600 gets you in a computer - should be plenty fast..

I was thinking a 19inch monitor. I already have 5.1 klipsch promedia speakers....and ill just use my old sound card too...so basically just the processor, harddrive, vid card and memory...and mobo....and if anything is left over i upgrade the sound card

Unless he is overclocking I wouldn't bother with fancy overclocking ram.
Something from Crucial or Corsair Value would do just fine I'd think.

Hey thanx for the suggestions..any more is welcome...

I dnot plan to overclock at all really so i dont need anything that would enchance that
