$2000 computer - advice needed

hey guys since I'm not really into the technical aspects of PC's all that much I hoped I could obtain some of your expert advice 🙂 The rig is to be mainly used for gaming, some multimedia and the occasional lanning and I will be making the purchase in the next month. So far this is what I have come up with, roughly:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ ($420)
Asus K8V Deluxe ($160)
Corsair PC4000 512MB DDR ($180)
Seagate 160GB 7200RPM 8MB SATA ($130)
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB ($305)
Samsung 172T-Silver 17" LCD ($560)
Plextor 8X DVD-RW +RW DVD Recorder ($230)
Lian Li PC-60 + P/S ($140)
Creative Audigy 1 ($55)

Total: 2180

And hopefully, a forcefeedback wheel and a Zalman 6.1 pair of headphones.

While I do think it's a bit too expensive I really don't want to take any significant shortcuts, considering I'm upgrading from a pentium 3 🙁 That's why I really want this system to last 2-3 years, with the ability to upgrade from there. I do have a few concerns though. First, will the A64's be significantly cheaper in a month's time, and should I stall until then? Secondly, I'm also considering the Radeon 9800 TX since I was planning to get HL2, but then again the PRO will become cheaper as a result. And finally with the LCD; although I have given significant thought to investing in a 19"/21" CRT, I'm really leaning the way of the LCD for its size, weight, etc. Only concern with it is its price, and its 25ms respond time, although I plan on testing it in store to check for ghosting, etc.

Well I would really appreciate all of your advice, regarding the specs and especially, its futureproofability (haha what other word is there!). Thanks in advance.

The Athlon 64 is a bit overkill for now, unless you're planning on keeping this machine for a while. PC4000 RAM is also overkill, PC3200 will be just fine (Buffalo PC3200 is about $85-90 at Newegg for a 512MB stick), and you could use the money go get an Audigy2. For $305 couldn't you get a retail Built By ATI 9800 Pro? Also, that case looks a bit pricy, and what power supply does the case come with?

I would personally go Intel or wait for the holidays when price drop insanely 😀
Maybe they'll go down enough for you to buy a that 21" Samsung LCD 😛

I would also vote for a 19 inch crt. Use the extra to get 1 gig of ram, an I don't know what PS is in that case, but I hope its a good quality 350-400 watt PS. If not get an Antec 430, they are the best IMO.

Other than that, I love your choices, and Welcome to Anandtech forums.

For that system 1 GB of PC3200 makes more sense than just 512 MB of PC4000.

19" CRT is good for gaming since it's not limited to 1280x1024 like the LCD is, and it's $250+ cheaper (pay for that 9800XT). For Doom3 & HL2 you'll probably need to run 1024x768 for better framerates so having a monitor than really can switch to that resolution (instead of using awkward upscaling) is a Good Thing.

Ditto. I forgot to mention that in mine. Unless you are going to OC, in the new world of gaming 1 gig is what you need.

Even if he does OC, he won't be OCing high enough to take advantage of PC4000 speed.
