200 gig HDD, Windows only sees 133 gigs

Hi,

As the title states, I have a problem with windows not being able to recognize my 200 gig harddrive. I understand that Windows itself has a limit on the size that it will recognize, hence the 133 gigs that windows can see.

I would like to partition my HDD into 3 partitions, something along the lines of 100, 75 and 25. Is there a way I can make my computer recognize all 200 gigs, then letting me partition it? I've tried fdisk, but that didn't work.

you will need to enable large disk support under windows. do a search for big LBA on google or something. also it might not even work then, your hard drive controller may not recognize the full drive. you may have to buy a new ata controller.

WinXP, SP1 installed already.

I read up on big LBA, and it seems that Maxtor advises to download some drivers for it. Thing is, how am I to even install the drivers when I don't even have an OS to use it on?

If I were to format and partition this 200 gig drive in another computer, get all the partitions straightened up, and throw it in my new computer, will that work? Will my new computer recognize all 3 partitions?

Or do a Google.

Or search here in the forums.

Me thinks your mobo doesn't support large drives. Next logical step is to check w/mobo maker and see if a BIOS update is available. If not, easiest solution is to purchase ATA card for $10. Not only do you end worries of large drives, but you also get the opportunity to put your drives on separate channels, thus resulting in a very tiny speed increase.
