200 CD-R's for $20 no MIR Officemax B&M

I went to Officemax yesterday. 200 generic cd-r's $59.99 with $40 instant rebate. Heres a linky with the same product on the web but without the rebate.
 
Deal confirmed at my local OfficeMax. $40 instant rebate is in the
computer, but not marked/noted on the shelf. These are generic
CDRs, but they are rated at 32x speed...and they are 80 minutes.
Consists of a box with 4 shrinkwrapped bundles of 50 inside.
No spindles and of course no cases.

I doubt anyone has CDRs cheaper anywhere without a rebate: $0.10 each.
At that price, they are perfect for any non-critical purpose.

Confirmed at the Hutchinson, Kansas OM (which has to be one of the nation's most obscure OM's, but never mind...). They had maybe 40 of these boxes of CD's, and there was a bright yellow flyer posted in the doorway advertising a few special sale prices this week, including this one. The only other price that caught my eye was a 16/10/40 CD-RW by Cendyne for $39 after MIR. They were out of this, but gave me a raincheck at the $39 price (i.e., no rebate necessary!).

I bought 4 boxes for a total of 800 CD's. 80 min., 32X rated, plain silver top. Quality seems fine--they aren't threatening to delaminate out of the box like some CompUSA branded.

Thanks for the deal! 2,000 blank CDR's in my closet, and counting. 😎 Every week there's a sale at $5 to $8, I buy another pack. I've been following Anandtech for about 2 years, and this is definitely the lowest price per CD without a MIR that I have ever heard of.

P.S.--The music industry is in some serious doo-doo when I can buy 150 blank CD's for the price of one storebought music CD.

I've been using these on a 24x TDK, 24x Lite On and a 24X QPS and they seem to be ok.

I bought another 1000 of em.

I just returned from the OM in Crestwood, IL.

They had two in stock.
One was opened and missing about 5 discs.
Naturally, I ended up buying the one that was complete.

$ .10¢ a piece is definitely a bargain for everyday recording.

OfficeMax near me sold out!! But they had Spin-X CD-R 100pack 32x 80min for $6.99 after $30MIR. These are on a spindle. CDR Identifier shows identical spec.
 
I know they're blank faced, but do they have a protective coating at all? Anyone who's done a coaster could scrape a fingernail across one and report back 🙂

The ones I got from shop4tech are blank faced, but are as hard to destroy as any printed surface ones I've had. Just wondering.

Walked in "requested" the instant rebate, it rang up with $40 off. Should be set for a while as far as CD-Rs are concerned. Thanks for the heads-up.

2000 in storage?? Dude by that time DVD writers will be mainstream and CDR's will be history. What a waste if you ask me.... unless you sell them in time.

It's quite possible to use up 2000 cdr's in a year or two.
I've used nearly 1300-1500 in the past 9 months and need to backup another 500 to 700 cds right now. I'm into "collecting" digital media and my two computers are connected day and night. Yes, I'm addicted to downloading and the bad part is I hardly have the time to even listen, watch, play or even try the stuff I collect. (And no, I don't sell)

So, it's quite feasible to use 2000 cdrs because as soon as I get time to backup from my 600 gigs of hard drive space that is almost full I will be over 2000 in one year.

I've got several friends with 1000+ CD music collections. My public library has at least 3000 music CD's. Plus, I'd like to back up my own 1000+ legit music CD's and store them somewhere, in case of theft, fire, etc. For $100 to make 1000 copies, that's a pretty cost-effective insurance policy.

And yes, I download all sorts of stuff to burn to CD's. It's a hobby/obsession. I've read about 50-100 GB optical writeable discs for a while now, and those would be great, but I've been reading about them for several years with no product in sight. Terabyte hard drives will also be here soon enough.

Anyway, in the grand scheme of computer related purchases, CD's depreciate less and give me more actual enjoyment for a longer time than any other purchase. If you want to talk about a questionable purchase, I might point to a $350 Geforce 4 4600ti so that someone can run 1600X1200 at 4X antialiasing as opposed to 2X antialiasing. (Not that I have a problem with that sort of purchase.)
 
I've gotten some of these in 50 packs. They're el-cheapo CMC discs. I've had no problems writing at 24x and under but a few 32x and 40x drives do not like these discs. They're a great deal though if you burn a lot of discs and then throw them away later.

Ian, I'm not sure what you mean by that statement. Except for the early CompUSA CDR's (maybe 3 years ago), every CD that I have burned, from the least to the most expensive, is still working fine. I expect that 99+% of these CDR's will still be working in 10 years, as long as I take reasonable care of them. I've read speculation about which CDR's (e.g., Kodak golds) might last 100 years instead of 75, but that is frankly irrelevant for me. We will surely be using a vastly different storage medium in 15 or 20 years, with data capacity that will allow me to (just speculating) hold every stereo compact disc ever produced in the palm of my hand, or at least place on a shelf in a closet.

My goal is to archive my music, and all the interesting music I can copy from others' collections, until we get to that storage medium paradigm shift. Today's cheap CDR's do the job for me--although it is true that particularly valuable data or music I would back up on something like Fujifilm or Kodak.
 
🙂 ian's pretty well regarded in the cdr/cdrw net world. check out the site he moderates and reviews for. i would think he burns way more cds than the average user.
