Trying to cut down the cost of my new build...

I dont care whether or not i go ATI or Nvidia, but i just want to get the best performance i can get for around 200 to 250 dollars.

Any help is appreciated! I'm not too familiar with ATI so i thought i would ask here. thanks!
 
I was looking at those. I just didnt know if ATI had anything to compare. I keep hearing their middle-high end are better price/performance than Nvidia's.

Most reviews give the performance edge to the 260+. You also get PhysX/CUDA for free.

A 4870 1GB performs pretty close. I would recommend XFX if you were to go that route.
 
The GTX 260 with 216 stream processors and the HD 4870 1GB perform similarly. The GTX 260 wins in some games, the 4870 wins in others, so I'd look around at the benchmarks and see which one performs better in the games you care about. They're both solid cards, though, so you can't really go wrong either way.

If you find a 4870 1GB or GTX 260 C216 for at or under $200, that would be the best buy. I have seen both (AR) for a little less than $200.00. Either would be a great buy at that price.
 
There's a Sapphire HD4850x2 1GB (2x512MB) for 235$ before rebates. It will run circles around a GTX260 or HD4870.

Take note that it's a CF card (two HD4850s on one board) and that the cooling is reported to be loud.

But as far as performance goes, I don't think you can get remotely close to this offer.
 
The 2GB (2x1GB) one is over 250$, the limit for the OP. There's also a 1GB version (2x512MB) for 235$ before rebates.
 
4850x2 2x512mb is the fastest card for your given budget, period. And according to the Anand article, it does not suffer crossfire issues as 2 discreet 4850 in crossfire mode (meaning, there does not seem to be any scaling issues).

How is that pricey? 😕 I'd say that's an amazing price for the performance you're getting. I paid 400$ for my HD4870 512MB when they went retail (I live in the EU though 😛). That was like what, 5 months ago? Not to mention you need to pay 50$+ more for a GTX280 which is comparable at best (mostly slower).

Keep in mind, however, that the AT article used a 2x1GB 4850x2.
 
the 2gig version is complete overkill to 99.5% of users. the $224 1gig version is what you should get. 4850 x2 destroys the gtx 260, no reason at all to get that gpu if you just care about performance.
 
Amazing, PCGH did a write-up on this just today, AT has also put out a few articles over the last few days with multi-GPU and scaling. From the PCGH review:

PCGH High-End Single GPU versus middle-class CF/SLI

Conclusion: SLI and Crossfire solutions have evolved but basic problems have not been solved. Micro stuttering is a consistent disadvantage, scaling in games is insufficient in certain cases and at low frame rates the input lag can be annoying. But the biggest drawback of two low priced middle-class cards is still the inferior amount of memory. Therefore a similarly priced single high-end card is, in our opinion, the better choice.

Personally I don't think multi-GPU ever makes sense unless the fastest single GPU isn't fast enough for you. If you do decide to go multi-GPU though, definitely get that 2GB version, otherwise those GPUs may choke at the very resolutions and settings you'd need multi-GPU to begin with.

Definitely agree with your assessment. For 1920x1200 4850 x2 1gig is good enough. Beats the hell out of GTX 260 for sure. Even shoot fireballs on GTX 285 at that resolution.
