20 years ago tomorrow: The Montreal Massacre.

Past Lifer 1957-2014 In Memoriam

I had just started teaching at the University of Ottawa when this tragic event occurred. Sadly, the memory of it is starting to fade already amongst younger people. I'm gonna pause for a minute to reflect on violence against women and pray for all the victims. I believe in a merciful God and I'm gonna pray for the killer too. Maybe he asked God for forgiveness before turning the gun on himself.

I haven't seen it but the movie done about this is supposed to be excellent and respectful.

As a man, one wonders if one could have stood up and defended the victims or if one would have exited the room too. It's difficult to say how one would react when facing a loaded gun.

I hope I'm not offending, but I'm curious about this...do you think God would forgive him if he did ask before offing himself?

I think God would. My God is a merciful God.

From Wikipedia:

Luke 23:34

Then Jesus said, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do".

This first saying of Jesus upon the cross was Jesus' prayer for forgiveness for those who were crucifying him: the Roman soldiers, and apparently for all others who were involved in his crucifixion.

In Matthew 5:44, Jesus exhorts his followers to love their enemies and to pray for those who persecute them. This verse appears to reflect Jesus' teaching of unqualified love and forgiveness for all, including those who might seem to oppose or even attack them.

don't go there. its like claiming theres societal wide hatred of cops that led to the shooting of those 4 cops in washington.

sometimes crazy is crazy.

I was 14 when this happened, and remember it well. Such a terrible tragedy.

I seriously doubt he went from a state of pure hatred to one of genuine remorse in the minutes before he killed himself...

This guy had a problem with his reaction:
Some students and staff never stepped foot in the Polytechnique again. Sarto Blais, a graduate, hanged himself eight months after the massacre, saying in his suicide note he was torn apart by guilt that he didn't stop Lepine.

The following June, his parents also committed suicide, unable to cope with the loss of their only son.

Your "merciful" god allowed this to happen. What a great guy he is but remember, since it's bad he had nothing to do with it. He only helps when something good happens.

Depends if you had a loaded gun or not.

Any guesses as to why sociopaths love schools to conduct their shooting sprees?

This is a cause celebre for the liberal gun control advocate in Canada. They bring it out every year.

The house of common voted to abolish the gun registry last month and the surviving family members call this a slap in the face of the victims. 🙄

What a joke. Gun control would not have save their daughters back then. As a mater of fact, If somebody had had a hand gun with them he/she might have been able to do something about Lepine.

The gun registry is dead The conservatives are killing it slowly but surely.

We can all thank God for that.

Never heard of this massacre. Don't like reading about it. I still hate hearing about VT, too much emotion. RIP for the victims, I hope people in Montreal remember them.
