i'm going to vegas wednesday and have heard about this trick but never done it. i'm staying at the cosmopolitan and had planned on trying it out, but since i've never done anything before like this it is going to feel awkward to me lol.

just wondering if people here have done it before, and if so, how it went?

Hotel: Cosmopolitan
Date: May 31 - June 2 13
Time: 9pm
Airport or Hotel Check-in: Hotel
Clerk Gender: F
Clerk Age Aprox.: mid-late 30's
Tip Amount: $20
Success?: Yes
Reserved Room: City room (double queen w/ a city view)
Upgraded To: Terrace King Studio with Bellagio fountain view and complimentary roll-away

Booked the room at a convention rate for the weekend at a literal steal. First time tipping for a better room. Sandwiched the tip and she slid it towards her without even looking between the two--immediately started looking up different rooms without me saying a word. She offered me a one bedroom suite, but told her I really wanted the view as I was in town with friends. She said there were no suites with two beds (since I had 3 people) and what was on offer with a view was limited because it was so late, but she offered to give me the king studio and a complimentary roll-away. Once we'd settled on the room, she opened the sandwich and thanked me for the tip.

yeah i saw that, and that's really only one of the reports i've heard about it at the cosmo. there doesn't seem to be many people who have reported about it there, success or fail.

i've got a terrace studio so it would be cool if we got upgraded to one of the higher up ones facing the fountain at the bellagio. chances are i will just give it a go and see what happens, but i am also curious people's success rates on here if they've done it, regardless of the hotel.

I did it during a fairly busy time this June.. Got me upgraded to a slightly nicer room with a much better view. I'll definitely do it again, but it doesn't usually work at the more expensive properties (Cosmo...)

Yup, my buddy uses it all the time. He's had a pretty good success rate.

at the cosmo or in general?

was doing some more searching and found a thread on flyertalk about people having success at the cosmo. i don't see many people talking about doing it at the cosmo, but all of the ones that i have read say they have had success. i'll find out in a couple days.

i'm just gonna mention that we're there for my wifes 30th bday as well wonder if that will help at all.

I didn't think it would work but it did! Was upgraded to a full suite in the Las Vegas Hotel. Had a bar, couch, and all types of shit in it. All I did was take the $20 out... slide it to the dude and said "Is there anyway you can make things a little more accommodating for us?" BAM... it worked. 😀

Wouldn't the front desk clerk get fired if he/she got caught doing that?.
I think they just enter some BS reason in the computer as to why the room wasn't what was originally reserved. Besides, Vegas is completely service driven and nothing drives service likes tips. I would have thought a place like the Cosmo would require more than $20 for success. I used a $50 at Vdara last month. Got a better view but unfortunately the place was pretty booked so there wasn't much availability. But the girl certainly was a lot friendlier as a result.

It really depends. Slower weekend it's worked every time for us without any extra fees. Busier weekends we get upgrades without tipping but we have to pay the difference (although still at a much lower price than if we booked it outright).
