20 pin PSU able to work on an AMD 740G board?

like, i understand that it will FIT, but will it supply enough power to keep the board running?

I'm planning on getting either an AMD 690G or 740G board with an AMD AM2 X2 3800+ CPU and 2 x 2GB's of Corsair DDR2-800 1.8V RAM @ 5-5-5-15 timings, along with either a Radeon 3850 or X1650 Pro GPU.

the PSU i had in mind was a Thermaltake Purepower 420w W0009. i found one on sale in the FS section for $20.

i would like a better understanding of this too. What is the difference if I use a 20pin or a 24pin. How would using a 20pin to 24pin connector make a difference. What about the CPU power pin, 4pin vs 8pin, and the 4pin to 8pin converter? I read that all of this doesnt matter as long as when you plug it in and it fits.

You can use a 20pin on a 24pin without issue. The extra 4 pins are extra voltage. The 20pins can deliver it, they made it 24 just to fit within the ATX spec I believe. The main thing to look at is that most 20pin older PSU's do not have the 12v amperage required to run a modern system. At that time, they gave them more 5v than 12v.

The 24-pin ATX allows it to carry more current, not voltage. Each wire can carry a certain amount of current, adding a few more wires allows for more current on those rails.

That only has 18A on the +12v. Probably fine for your rig, but it doesn't leave much room for upgrades and it may struggle with a Radeon 3850.

everything worked out. i got an Ultra Lifetime series 500 watt PSU with i think 25A on the 12V rail's, probably more i cant recall right now.
