I have been stuck for more then a month about what setup I want to go with. Either dell's new 20" lcd or a good set of dual 17's. What do you guys think? What would you choose, it should be about the same amount of $.

BTW, not much into gaming. If I get the 20" I will be using a ATI 9600NP and if I go dual it will me a dual DVI Matrox.

If I had that much cash, I'd go for the dual 17" displays. I used to have dual 17" CRTs, and I liked it a lot.

Once you go dual you'll wonder how you got anything done w/ single display.

If color accuracy is important then I wouldn't get any 17" LCD. I don't know if I would get LCD if that's the case. If you're set on getting an LCD and money and color is important then I would look at Dell 1800FP or 1801FP. But for color work I would stick w/ dual 19" CRTs like diamondtron and such.

i had the exact same concerns. i find that i am more productive with two screens, its much easier to handle multiple tasks or read from one screen and work on another.

i ended up with two Samsung 173T LCDS running both in DVI. the colors are great. i do photoshop work on them all the time. the issue is finding dual DVI video cards, if you don't game, then the obvious choice is matrox but i do that too... at any rate, in the 'video' forum there is a sticky thread about dual DVI cards, hopefully we'll see more in the future.

if u want to see some pics email me

Amen. When my secondary 17" display died, before I could replace it I had to suffer with an old 15" display that barely worked. My thinking was that anything was better than a single display.

I also agree that I am not sure LCDs are ready for accurate color representation. But I suppose on how much you want to spend (I imagine a bit, as 2 17" LCDs aren't that cheap ;)). I imagine high end (ie out of my price range, therefor out of my interest in knowing too much about them) LCDs are better than the common consumer-level LCDs available. And it also probably depends on just how accurate you need the colors to be. Personally, I still feel CRT is the way to go for graphics work. At least 2 of them ;)

I have dual 19" sony CRTs and couldn't imagin going back to a single display. A lot of people that come over are like, "Why do you have two monitors." My response is, " Because I can."

I also vote for the Samsungs - dual 19 samsung is my ultimate wet dream

Dual. Used to have dual 15" LCDs now I am on a single 18" Ultrasharp. However, that will change to dual 18" Ultrasharps sometime.

someone correct me if i'm wrong but you can do a dual monitor setup with the ati card as well. I believe if you have one monitor on the d-sub and one on the dvi the ati drivers allow you to do a dual setup.

Yup, I had my dual 1800FP's on a ATI Radeon 8500LE, one on the DVI connection and the other on the analog VGA. I recently switched to a dual DVI nVidia 5600 though. Been tempted to go triple headed goodness with a 2001FP in the center but I don't think they make triple DVI video cards and I don't want to hassle with a separate PCI video card.

i think if you want triple or higher your gonna have to go with matrox. and I wasn't a math major but matrox + gaming = fps suckage :)

btw if you wanna talk about really kick @ss multiple monitor setups I think these are my favorites.

for dual dvi you can try to game on a FireGL XT card.. heheh its basically a 9800Xt with dual DVUI and optimized driver and design for rendering.

that is if you have 700+ bucks to spend on a video card.

I use a 9800pro AIW and a PCI G450 DVI 32mb to run my samsung LCDs in DVI.

I game on the 191T and watch DVDs on the 172w.

That's only if you want one video card. What I would do, assuming I could afford that many displays ;) would be to get a gaming card for my AGP slot and then a PCI card(s) for the additional displays. IIRC the Parhelia is available in PCI. That could potentially be 5 displays (2 on the AGP video adapter, 3 on the Matrox). Also, so far as I recall, Windows XP Pro can support 8 or 10 displays. If one had that kind of cash and space... ;)

Just an update....

I grew tired of waiting for a sale on the dell 18"s and couldn't decide on two 17's, so I picked up a 2001fp when they were on last week for $750.

This monitor rocks, I wasn't sure if I would like it and was planning on sending it back if I wasn't totally happy. Well all I can say it it blew me away. If you are on the fence, get the dell, I sit ~24" away and have no screen door effect and the colors are beautiful.

I can't really say if I would have been happier with a dual setup or not, but I am not looking back.
