20+4 issue

So I pick up a 650W enhance power supply today and I thought i saw it was 20+4 only to find out it doesnt have a seperate/unhookable 4 connector. Can I just cut the plastic so I can use the 4 on the end? wire colors are the same.
 
nope enhance are basically oem versions of silverstone or aska just comes the psu and a power cord. I may have an adaptor somewhere but Ill have to look. after checkin all my psu here the wire colors are all the same so Im bettin i can do it just need some reassurance that i wont fry my setup.

From what Google Image Search provides, it looks like the extra 4 pins have a hinge on one side and a latch on the other. They sort of "twist" free and out of the way, without fully separating. I have a 20+4 pin unit that works similarly. Anyway that's what it looks like from the picture on this page (Google translated).
 
Just want to add that i cant use a 24-20 adaptor because I need the 4 pins for the other plug. someone has to have a answer to this. Looking at it everything is the same as the thermaltake its replacing except its not detachable like the thermaltake.
 
Thanks for the research but it appears mine has no hinge?!?! Im very close to just cuttin 4 off and using it since it seems thats the way its supposed to be anyway.

I'm pretty sure that the "other 4-pin plug" (12V) is something completely separate from the extra four pins of the ATX 24 pin connector if you're just using 20. Unless I'm completely misunderstanding what you're saying.
 
Im saying there is ONLY a 24 pin. Theres no seperate 4pin. So I would need a 20 pin and a 4pin. so a 24-20 adaptor would do no good because that would leave me needing the 4 pin connector. has me befuddled and thinkin of just gettin a 24 pin motherboard since I wanted to upgrade to a better overclocker anyway.
 
You cannot use the "+4" plug of the ATX cable for your purpose. However, you can split up the 8-pin connector and use one of the halves in the P4 plug. Which half? I don't know.
 
If I'm hearing you correctly, you want hold of the the 4pin cpu connector - which is the 8pin cpu connector on this eps12v psu. If the 8 pin connector is the split/detachable type, then you're in luck. If not ....
 
K i found the 8 pin and should be able to split it by lookin at the colors Id imagine. And if i slice off the extra 4 pins on the 24 pin I should be ok right? Or should I wait and just buy a new board with a 24 pin even though im broke?

Why do you keep asking about cutting the off extra pins? You are suppose to use the detachable 4/8pin cpu connector for the 4/8pin cpu socket on the mb. Then you plug in the 20/24pin connector on the main power socket. Let the 4 extra pins hang off the power socket in your case.
 
There is nothing that is detachable thats why i speak of the cutting. they are all non-detachable connectors. its a solid 24 and a solid 8. I guess Ill try it out now leaving them hang off if it fits. see how it goes... ::update:: Well since none are detachable they def wont let me leave the extras hang off just plain doesnt fit or theres caps in the way.
 
Just sliced off the 4 extra from the 24 and 8 to make it fit but the 4 pin still will not fit. Im just going to put it back together and send it back. Order a new one from newegg or something. Dont know what the hell board this thing would work with...
 
weird. says in the description that they're split.

Yea I dont know how i ended up with the one that wasnt... figures my luck. I already ordered a new mobo and psu from newegg, OCZ gamestream. I guess ill superglue the plastic back together and sell this or keep it for another rig who knows. Pisses me off cuz everything said it should be split and obviously im not very patient.
 
You don't have to cut the extra four wires off if there is a little clearance off the end of the ATX connector. The "orange wires" end has to be inside the ATX connector and the four hanging over the end will be one each of blk, red, orange, yel. Looks like there is room off the end on that mobo. The connectors will only go together the correct way w/o forcing.

At each contact interface there is the potential for corrosion, noise or resistance due to poor crimps, cheap Chinese contacts, loosening from thermal cycling etc. Best to limit contact interfaces in high current circuits. I have a PSU coming and some places say it has a 20+4 and others just say 24-pin. So I may have mine hanging off the end again like I did when I had a Zippy in my box. You can always tack the ATX plug and socket together with a dab of hot glue on every side (clean the shell with alcohol before hot-glueing) if you're worried about the plug coming out. Hot glue will peel right off when you need to unplug.

Some company has a patent (Taiwanese and maybe US too) on a 20+4 design, so a number of companies stopped using them rather than pay. Some models that would have had 20+4, now have a solid 24-pin shell. I don't know if that patent applies to just the common, slide apart type or all types. As I know there is at least one other type that just pops apart like pop beads.

well the 20 pin wont be a issue since i sliced the connector to get the 4 off because it wouldnt fit for me for some reason. Im gonna order the 8 to 4 convertor for the other issue. I have OCZ gamexstream 600w on the way just incase. If all works out ill save the OCZ for another build. Just hate the idea of adaptors but no choice here and im sure it will be fine.
