20/20 last night

Any watch this special I Found it very interesting. Basically it had the top 10 ways that our civilization can end today and the #1 way is global warming and it seems to be a much bigger threat than I imagined.

The glaciers in the antartic and what not are melting at such a high rate that most of japan/china and part of US such as Florida, New Orleans etc would be gone. London would be no more as well. They said its predicted that 100 million people would be come refugee and they compared tha tto the 100 thousand people that were refugee after Katrina (no this isn't a katrina thread i promise). They said that the melting has increased drastically and this is a very real threat and can be as early as 50-100 years from now.

If you are that worried about it, buy land that is cheap now, but a little bit from the ocean. If you are right and the oceans rise (which is debatable) then you'll own large tracts of the new ocean front property. Die a wealthy man.

errrr.......if there is global warming to the point where the oceans become desalinated enough to stop the flow of warm water to the northern hemisphere, then it's going ot be an ice age...not massive flooding as yo say.

I do believe that global warming is real and is something to fear, but it seems to me that if this particular scenario were real, we would already see a rise in the water levels in Florida and the other places mentioned.

The earth is at the very end of an ice age. It is supposed to do this. And in millions of years people will talk about how the waters are receding and that havoc will ensue...it is cyclic. This is what is supposed to happen and there is no way to stop it.

If you are stupid enough to own land that is within a few feet of sea level, or below (cough cough New Orleans cough) then I would suggest you sell and move.
Seriously, who buys property, next to the ocean, that is below sea level?

I don't think it's anything we can stop, either because there's too much momentum or it's just a natural cycle we have no control over. I'm not really opposed to trying though, we should be able to develop some nice cool new tech like better power generation and ultimately a cleaner environment.

I thought these was a very cool show. And Michio Kaku will do anything to be on TV. He's in everything it seems. The black hole and gamma ray burst ones were the scariest, because we as a whole, can not escape it. we will all die.

Earthquakes are in CA, so they don't effect us much, and when the big one hits, we'll have the new San Diego. 😀

No tornadoes, no hurricanes, no real floods, no volcanoes. Just heat. Dry heat.

20/20 stole the entire show from the discovery channel, a complete rip-off really. Nothing was new, and they didn't even cover the grey-goo scenario where nanobots consume everything in a couple of hours. It was nice to have Hawking, but he didn't really add much.
