2 year old hard drive, still new in box

I'm wondering if anyone thinks using a "new" hard drive that has been sitting in the box for almost 2 years would be looking for trouble?

Should be absolutely fine. Hard drives go bad with use, eventually, due to the continual rotation. I wouldn't trust it so much after a century in the box(the lubricants might well have degraded chemically at some point) but within a few years you'll be fine.

my other comp is running on a 5 year old maxtor just fine 😕

hell i think the 3rd one is running on a even older 20 gig maxtor/quantum that i ripped out of a p2/p3 system my school was throwing away

The only drive I ever had kick off on me was a Western Digital...

That said, if you're worried about the drive, you can send it to me and I'll perform... extensive testing for you.

i've had 2 40GB maxtors for a number of years, a 120GB maxtor for about 2 years, and a 200GB maxtor for about a year. Never had any problems with them. The only HD i ever had problems with was a 6.4GB quantam(sp?) died in about 1 week, stayed with maxtor ever since.

I personally hate maxtor. Every drive that has ever failed in my life has been a maxtor. But never at home. Even tho I hate em I have 3 of em at home that hasnt crapped out. (got great deals on em), Its always been at work when they fail. they have made my job miserable for years!

Yep, it's a Maxtor Black Friday deal from 2 yrs ago. It will be going into a system for my parents that will be created by using parts from my existing system when I build my new one shortly.

My system will contain 2 Seagate 250GB 7200.8 SATA drives! 🙂

Thanks,
BGC
