MENSA joke

Brain Exercise

Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of the muscles. As we grow older, it's important that we keep mentally alert. The saying: "If you don't use it, you will lose it" also applies to the brain.

Below is a very private way to gauge your loss or non-loss of intelligence. So take the following test presented here and determine if you are losing it or are still a MENSA candidate. OK, relax, clear your
mind and . . . begin.

1. What do you put in a toaster?

The answer is bread. If you said "toast", then give up now and go do something else. Try not to hurt yourself. If you said, "bread", go to question 2.

2. Say "silk" five times. Now spell "silk". What do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said "milk", please do not attempt the next question. Your brain is obviously overstressed and may even overheat. It may be that you need to content yourself with
reading something more appropriate such as "Children's World". If you said, "water" then proceed to question three.

3. If a red house is made from red bricks and a blue house is made from blue bricks and a pink house is made from pink bricks and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a greenhouse made from?

Answer: Greenhouses are made from glass. If you said "green bricks", what the heck are you still doing here reading these questions? If you said "glass", then go on to
question four.

4. Twenty years ago, a plane is flying at 20,000 feet over Germany. If you will recall, Germany at the time was politically
divided into West Germany and East Germany. Anyway, during the flight, TWO of the engines fail. The pilot, realizing that the last remaining engine is also failing, decides on a crash landing procedure. Unfortunately the engine fails before he has time and the plane crashes smack in the middle of "no man's land" between East
Germany and West Germany. Where would you bury the survivors - East Germany or West Germany or in "no man's land"?

Answer: You don't, of course, bury survivors. If you said ANYTHING else, you are a real dunce and you must NEVER try to rescue anyone from a plane crash. Your efforts would not be appreciated. If
you said, "Don't bury the survivors" then proceed to the next question.

5. If the hour hand on a clock moves 1/60th of a degree every minute then how many degrees will the hour hand move in one hour?
Answer: One degree. If you said "360 degrees" or anything other than "one degree", you are to be congratulated on getting this far, but you are obviously out of your league. Turn your pencil in and
exit the room. Everyone else proceed to the final question.

6. Without using a calculator - You are driving a bus from London to Milford Haven in Wales. In London, 17 people get on the bus. In Reading, six people get off the bus and nine people get on. In Swindon, two people get off and four get on. In Cardiff, 11 people get off and 16 people get on. In Swansea, three people get off and five people get on. In Carmathen, six people get off and three get on. You then arrive at Milford Haven. What was the name of the bus driver?

Answer: Oh, for goodness sake! It was YOU, Read the first line!!!

I passed the mensa test and didn't join 😛
/brag

so you paid for a psychological evaluation, took time out to take it, passed and then decided to not join?

or did you just pass at some other level that would denote you *could* be in mensa?

I took the entry exams when they had a special going on. It was a $25 testing fee and you could bring a friend for free.

A friend and I split the cost of gas and the testing fee to go, just out of curiousity.

I didn't know mensa did their own testing....I thought it was always independent. Maybe it's changed.

Most think http://www.mensa.org/index0.php?page=12 this is enough to get into Mensa...however; these answers have floated around the net for a long time so many are simply recalling things they saw before. Also many take that test several times prior to 'posting' their score.

I scored right under 140 on an IQ test which equated to right under 160 on the other type. Not quite genius, but within the top 1%...I don't get into IQ to much as everyone today seems to somehow have scored higher than me, is in mensa, and were writing novels by 2 years old.

Exactly my thoughts. Having a good memory doesn't mean you are able to reason with all this stuff you can remember.

For example, you could teach a bird to name all the parts of a car engine. (just like somebody naming the alphabet).. but if the engine breaks can the bird know how to fix it?

And, isn't this quite normal for a very very young child? All of the memory neurons or whatever they are called are pretty much 'empty' at this age. Young children learn more in their first 5 years than their entire lifetime.

Watch, at age 5 the child will have a speech impedament.
I'm just saying...
IQ doesn't have much to do with memorizing random facts. It's a measure of a person's ability to recognize patterns, solve problems, etc.

Stuttering doesn't have anything to do with intelligence either. There have been many brilliant people who have had speech problems (Isaac Newton, for example).

As has been mentioned, though, IQ tests at a young age are not always very accurate. I was tested in elementary school and scored a few points shy of 140 I think, but I've never felt very gifted, lol. Would be interesting to retake the test now that I'm older and see what I score, I have a feeling it would be lower.

PFfffT I tested at 147 in elementary school and 147 now.

is 156 really that impressive?

i think not

Then why isn't the other .2% with the higher IQ accepted into Mensa and got a news article out of it? 😕

I think you need to take a stats class.

No you.

Large number - 1 = approx. large number 😛

While this is generally true, there are situations where IQ--at least as measured by formal testing--can change over the lifespan, such as via neurologic/maturational changes resulting in resolution of a learning disorder or ADHD-related symptoms.

156 is simply not that impressive. i believe Anand's is higher.

Genius IQ is generally considered to begin around 140 to 145, representing ~.25% of the population (1 in 400). Here's a rough guide:

* 115-124 - Above average (e.g., university students)
* 125-134 - Gifted (e.g., post-graduate students)
* 135-144 - Highly gifted (e.g., intellectuals)
* 145-154 - Genius (e.g., professors)
* 155-164 - Genius (e.g., Nobel Prize winners)
* 165-179 - High genius
* 180-200 - Highest genius
* >200 - "Unmeasurable genius"

I didn't look into those sites too deeply, and I don't know where those numbers came from, but I can say that I personally don't know of any tests off-hand that go anywhere near 200 in terms of scoring upper-end.

Again, it depends on the test, but most generally don't go above 160, give or take.

My son taught himself to read at 1 1/2 YO. We didn't teach him a thing. He just started memorizing the words to stories we would read him each night. Then he started sounding out words phonetically.

I know this because at one point he was reading something and he said "pee see chick". I asked him to show me what it was he just read and it was the word "psychic". I think my son can top the girl in number of things remembered though. She only knows 35 capitals. My son knew every single car model and brand.

Beat that!!

They probably offer some pretty good scholarships and other educational opportunities for members.

I don't think he will get it.
What the hell are you talking about? Who won't get what?

That's a link to Mensa's "member benefits" site. Looks about like being a member of AAA to me.

Again, it's just a "bragging rights" organization. I could be in it, my daughter could. My son probably could. But do I get anything for paying that membership fee every year other than the ability to say I'm a member? No.
It'd be just as beneficial for me, as a business owner, to join the local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, etc.

Technically, "official" IQ can be determined at any time, as your performance is compared to normative samples based on a variety of demographic factors, among which level of education is one.

Of the tests that I regularly administer, none offers scores that go up to 200. And of all the clients I've evaluated, I don't know that I've seen a single individual with a full scale IQ of 156, as that is very near the ceiling of most measures.

I'd have to know the test, but yes, it's always possible that some do go that high. Then again, it's also possible that the individual(s) misread or misinterpreted his/her/their scores.

she showed it to at least 5 teachers [who mostly already knew]
- it was at a High School counseling for College prep - so they had all the official test scores and SATA results right there

she was shocked that this person was not heading straight for university

Unfortunately the engine fails before he has time and the plane crashes smack in the middle of "no man's land" between East
Germany and West Germany. Where would you bury the survivors - East Germany or West Germany or in "no man's land"?

Answer: You don't, of course, bury survivors. If you said ANYTHING else, you are a real dunce and you must NEVER try to rescue anyone from a plane crash. Your efforts would not be appreciated. If
you said, "Don't bury the survivors" then proceed to the next question.

Correct answer: In an unmarked grave in the soviet union, will all the other western "spies".

Hmm, maybe it was a measure specific to your particular school, then. Or one in limited use in such schools, as many times education-related tests are somewhat different from those used in other areas of psychological and neuropsychological assessment.

However, given the test mentioned in the article (the Standford-Binet), a 156 on that measure likely equated to about a 200 on the measure which your classmate was given. Although without knowing said measure's psychometric properties, that's just a guess.

Whittier High School, Whittier, CA - 40 years after Nixon graduated there 😛

- IQ was referred to as the "overall" score back then and it was the measure of many tests given all thorough my education

and very consistent with all 12 years of public education - back in the 50s they separated the kids by abilities and they would experiment on you
- my best friend and i were smart enough to get kicked out of the program by agreeing to be extremely disruptive - it took us less than a week to be returned to the public system by acting stupider than the supposed "smart kids"

it was much better being in a real public school; public education back in the 60s was extraordinary as the USA tried to beat the Russians at everything

IQ don't means Jack if you ain't got street knowledge so don't sweat it.

That's just something dumb people say to soothe their egos.

QFT...I am not the 'boss' but I grow tired of idiots saying how he knows nothing and lacks common sense.

It's an idiot's argument. Much like those that say they can act/sing/write/dance/etc better than "X" celebrity.

I'd have to know the test, but yes, it's always possible that some do go that high. Then again, it's also possible that the individual(s) misread or misinterpreted his/her/their scores.

First what's your credentials and what 'test' are you administering? I only ask because I know in other threads I have been in the person was giving an aptitude/admission test, not a real IQ test.

You are correct that on any of the top IQ tests you should not see many above or around 160, I can fully bet many that do give these tests never do.
